Company Overview
Backtracking to its humble beginnings, Wal-Mart was founded by Sam Walton who opened his first store in Rogers, Arkansas at the age of 44 (1962). By 1967, the family owned 24 stores and brought in $12.7 million in sales. Wal-Mart became a household name in the year of 1969 when the company was officially incorporated as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. By the 1980’s, over 21,000 associates were employed with 276 stores. In 1988, the first Wal-Mart Supercenter opened in Washington, Missouri. The supercenter provided customers with the ultimate shopping experience because it combined general merchandise and a full-scale supermarket which gave consumers a “one-stop shop” convenience. The flourishing of Wal-Mart continued as it expanded into Canada in 1994 with the purchase of 122 Woolco stores. Stores were also opened in China (1996). Wal-Mart is both the largest corporation and retailer known in the world today. U.S. operations include 1,478 Wal-Mart discount stores (located in all 50 states); 1,471 Wal-Mart Supercenters, which are combined discount outlets and grocery stores (and which make Wal-Mart the country 's top food retailer); 538 Sam 's Clubs, the number two U.S. warehouse membership club chain (trailing Costco Wholesale Corporation); and 64 Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets, smaller food and drug outlets also offering a selection of general merchandise.
