A group maybe defined as a number of individuals who join together to achieve a goal. Groups exist for a reason (Mill 1997). Another definition of a group is “a collection of people who spend sometime together, who see themselves as members and who are identified by outsiders as members of a group” (Preston-Shoot, 1987). This goes beyond just being a member of a group, members are loyal and committed to the group.

This feedback includes expressing one’s feelings about what someone says or does. Group members are encouraged to interact amongst themselves and provide each person with an opportunity to try out new ways of behaving; it also provides members with an opportunity for learning more about the way they interact with others. Members of the group make a commitment to the group and are suppose to observe the rule of confidentiality. Anything that transpires in the group should remain in the group.
In social work, groups are seen as an opportunity for help. People spend most of their time in groups, in their natural course of life, this is why social workers find it helpful to work with people in groups so that they are provided with an opportunity to improve that part of their human functioning.
