Evaluate Your Communication Style
Individually we are all different people inside and out, yet are expected to learn and communicate the same way as the people around us. An example would be in classes, each teacher teaches their class in a different way expecting someone who excels at learning hands-on, learn like a person who excels at verbal learning. Noticing the varied differences, we can improve how we communicate with others and make sure every person is learning without struggling. To insure each of us enforces our learning to the best of our ability, we can evaluate our communication style. Evaluation can show where we might lack or exceed. Evaluation can happen in various ways, one way we evaluated ourselves was by the activity “Communications Style Inventory.” After the class was done completing the activity we saw that out of the four groups each of us had a group that described us completely or almost correct. The style I found myself in was the Supporter/ Relater. I feel as if this accurately describes myself as I dislike adjustment , I’m non-judgmental, and an exceptional listener. With being in this category, there are several joys and frustrations on how others may view myself. A few of the frustrations that can come is not …show more content…
The first would be eye contact, when we use eye contact we feel as if they are talking directly towards us and their attention is solely on us. Next would be attitude, your attitude towards someone could make or break how that person sees you. The final component would be listening as when you listen you can gain people’s trust and overall learn more about that person. These three components help communicating effectively no matter what group we fall in. Situations that these could be helpful would range from a job interview for your dream job all the down to just sitting in class listening to the professor/ teacher

For example if someone is illiterate or uneducated they may feel threatened by eloquent and articulate language so it is important to speak in a simple and clear language and make eye contact so that they can understand you properly. Another example could be the nationality and culture of an individual as some cultures use very animated body language and a strong tone of voice or pitch to express themselves which may be perceived as excessive, unnecessary or intimidating by someone from a different background. In some cases it may be good to use lots of visual aids, physical contact and/or expressive body language if the person is deaf or hard of hearing in order to communicate effectively. Things like technology may be an issue for someone from a poor or under developed culture where things like smart phones and email are not widely available or used and they need educating on these kinds of methods and given other alternatives until they have familiarised…

It is also important to consider proximity, orientation and posture as you could be giving out the wrong signals without realising. Other things to consider are facial expressions, tone and pitch of voice and vocabulary used. It is important to be observant at all times so you can react to how the person you are talking to reacts. An example of this is when talking to a parent about issues with a child or issues at home, I would take them into another room to give them some privacy and a quiet environment. You might stand a bit closer and at an angle to show you are interested in what they have to say. But also be observant at the same time to make sure they are comfortable with this.…

Communication is the process of exchanging messages, which are either verbally and nonverbally. In order to communicate there must be a sender. The sender is the person who sends the message. The sender encodes the message for the recipient to interpret and receive. The message is the key idea that the sender is trying to communicate. The recipient is the person who is receiving the message. This individual has to decode the message in which they interpret or make out what the sender is trying to communicate to them. Verbal communication consists of the words a sender chooses to use for their message. An effective verbal message should be brief and organized. If a sender is rambling or unorganized it will be difficult for the receiver to understand the message. A verbal communicator has to have the right tone and establish credibility in the beginning. An individual must give and receive feedback. When verbally communicating you have to speak objectively, clear, and consistently. Nonverbal communications is shown through feelings, emotions, attitudes, body movements, gestures, eye contact and more. For example, a person may communicate with people through facial expressions. An individual face expression can help a receiver to understand the tone of the conversation. A person’s face is a huge displayer of emotions. The eyes tell a lot about emotions as well. Posture can also tell a receiver how a sender is feeling. Feelings, emotions, attitude and more are displayed nonverbally through body movement, gestures, and eye contact. Its not necessarily what a person says that matters, it is how they say it and how they display it. (Nonverbal Communication 2008)…

They say a picture paints a thousand words, and the same can be said for Body language. Body language definitely plays a big role in influencing communication, by observing body language alone it makes it easy for you toidentify whether somebody shows interest or puts value in what you are saying. It also allows you to make pre judgements about an individual. For instance an audience or an individual can perceive a speaker/someone as arrogant based on the body language he makes and not the content. Making body language a priority for effective communication.…

    (A) Communication has always been the most important skill when socialising and building relationships with people. When first meeting or approaching an individual, be it a child, young person or adult, body language and facial expressions can form good vibes between individuals. By bearing this in mind, a T.A can form a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere in which to work upon and follow up with good verbal communication. On the flip side, cold and expressionless body language could create an instant barrier between people meeting for the first time, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere. It may be that the other individual may struggle socially, and become nervous, fearful and feel the T.A is unapproachable just by judging first appearances. Friendly eye contact can compliment good use of body language and contribute to putting the person at ease if nervous. If addressing a group, eye contact with each individual can make the person feel equally as important as the next. These principles can be followed up by perhaps having the chance to talk on a one to one basis with the individuals and getting to know a bit about them. Communication is a two way track and listening is equally as important as talking. This gives the chance for the individual to feel heard and valued. Body language again of the T.A plays an important part, i.e. nodding and making appropriate facial expressions according commenting or reacting appropriately to the individual’s topic of conversation. This again can make the person feel valued and respected.…

Use eye contact, body language and correct facial expressions for the situation. Listen attentively. When communicating with small children get down to their level, and respond even if it is with a smile or the correct noise like a mmmmm, yes, mmmmm. Ensure you look at the person and not around the room to show an interest in what they are saying, answer them, encourage them, be interested, engage in a fuller answer or comment if you feel you can, maybe encourage them to think about what they have said and provide their own answers.…

Face expressions, body language, posture, dress style are silent messages we send to others, sometimes not what we intend, but nonetheless. First impressions are quite important; it is also good when you can support the first good impression with appropriate knowledge, experience and ability to get along with people. The old saying is “Look for the job you want, not for the one you have got”. Mostly nonverbal messages we send reveal our identities, the way we want people to see us, it is mainly communicating emotions. It also tells us in what relationships we are to the people we communicate with. If I would talk to a friend about personal matters I will sit either next to her or across her sipping my coffee, relaxing while would I speak to my boss I would choose a proper distance, proper attire and official demeanor. Also we should always be aware of cultural differences when communicating through gestures, signs or behavior because what is norm for one group of people may be looked at as disrespect to others.…
