The primary source of Earths heat is the Sun. The atmosphere absorbs the heat transmitted from the sun by the use of conduction, convection, and radiation. (Ahrens 30) Radiation is the kind of heat that gives people sunburns because the skin absorbs the heat. The reason as to why pots and pans used for cooking have plastic or rubber handles is because of conduction. Conduction is the transfer of heat from one molecule to another within an element. So as the burner gets hotter the heat travels through the pot/pan and warms the water; now we have a process called convection. Convection is the vertical movement of warm air/water upward and cool air/water downward.

2. What causes air pressure? Is there air pressure on the moon?
The weight of all of the air molecules above Earth’s surface is what causes air pressure. (Ahrens 10) The amount of air pressure decreases as we get farther away from Earth due to the air becoming less dense. The moon does not have air pressure due to the fact that there isn’t any air on the moon.

3. What are the principal gaseous components of the earth's atmosphere? Where do scientists believe these gases came from?
Nitrogen (N2),
Oxygen (O2)
Argon (Ar)
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Ozone (O3)
Water Vapor (H2O)
Xenon (Xe)
Helium (He)
Most scientists believe that this early atmosphere escaped into space from the earth's hot surface. Also, gases from molten rock within its hot interior escaped through volcanoes and steam vents. (Ahrens 5)
