One person that was punished by God in the Hebrew Bible was, Eve. Eve was punished by God because she disobeyed God. God told her, "from the tree of knowledge, good and evil, you shall not eat, for on the day you eat from it, you are doomed to die" (160). Eve did not obey God and she did eat from the tree of knowledge. After she did this God said, "Because you have done this, Cursed be you" (160-161). The message that is sent to the reader is that people are suppose to obey God and if people do not obey God then people will be punished. Another person that was punished by God was Cain. Cain was punished by God because "Cain rose against Abel his brother and killed him" (162). God then cursed Cain because of what he had done, "And so cursed

In the Bible Genesis 3:16,page 161 in our text book, God is talking to Adam and Eve after the apple tasting debacle and He says, “I will terribly sharpen your birth pangs, in pain shall you bear children. And for your man shall be your longing, and he shall rule over you.” As punishment for the sin, and clearly placing men above women in the hierarchy scale, He punishes Eve harshly. Adam gets in trouble as well but it was “ Because you listened to the voice of your wife and ate from the tree that I commanded you .You shall not eat from it.” This almost gives Adam a pass on the sin of eating the apple but gets Adam in trouble…

Hi Catherine! It is very true that God does not like when humanity disobey Him. As you mentioned, He does not tolerate it. The 9/11 tragedy is an example of punishment because God will not allows sins to go unpunished. He is so powerful that He make it known. Humanity will continue to sin and God will also continue to discipline humanity because of His purpose, to focus our attention to Him and the greatness of His power.…

He says how God hold sinners over hell and just decides when to drop these sinners. “He looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the fire” (215), says Edwards in his sermon. Edwards is trying to express to the congregation their imminent danger, but he is telling people this because he wants them to look for…

Although Edward’s message was designed to torment and terrify the listeners it was ultimately a message of hope to all people who were sinning and turning on God. He uses simple imagery to connect to his audience who were mostly illiterate. He compares God’s wrath to “Great Waters” he says “the wrath of God is like great waters that area dammed for the present, they increase more and more and rise higher and higher”. Just by knowing that an all-powerful God is mad at you would cause fear, but to know that His wrath towards you is growing greater and greater would cause even more fear and uneasiness to the listeners. But he then says God’s wrath will flood the earth only if he chooses to open the flood gates which give the listeners a glimpse of hope.…

(28). In one sentence he undermined the “work” that the members of the audience had done during their whole lives. These quotes “hold you over the pit of hell in such as one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect” (33), “hateful venomous serpent”(33), and “the poor worms” (37) overwhelmed the audience with the realization of God’s power. The audience understood that jyst as they could look down at an entire group of bugs with contempt and disregard, God could look down on humans as nothing but pests. All of this helps to enforce the idea that in the eyes of God they are sinners and therefore no more than mere…

One way that he does this is by using the metaphor of God being angry at everyone with a bow and arrow pointed directly at each person; the congregation realizes that they could die at any minute and if they aren’t saved, they will fall into a “lake of burning brimstone that is extended abroad under them”. Edwards also compares what would keep the lost from going to hell to a spider web trying to stop a falling rock. He tries to establish fear into his audience by telling them that God holds them over Hell just like “one holds a spider, or a loathsome insect” and this God also has “wrath towards [them that] burns like fire”. Jonathan Edwards preached this sermon so that the congregation will feel as though they had no other option than to accept Christ as their savior that very day if…
