Evelyn Glennie Scottish virtuosa percussionist, Evelyn Glennie once said, “Music is about communication…it isn’t just something that maybe physically sounds good or orally sounds interesting; it’s something far, far deeper than that.” Sound is practically everywhere and there are millions of unique sounds out there. Evelyn Glennie was born on July 19, 1965, and was raised in Scotland. Her father played a pivotal role in the direction that Glennie decided to take, ultimately falling in love with music. She started learning to play piano at the age of 8, later on branching out and increasing her repertoire of musical instruments. During this time, Glennie would begin to lose her sense of hearing little by little. Glennie became dependent on hearing aids at eleven, and people said she would never play music again. It must have been heartbreaking to Glennie considering how much she loved music and it was more than a passion, as she felt that she was born to be around music and sounds. Her father once again, supported Glennie and said that even with this setback; she would accomplish her goals in life. I can’t imagine life without sound, what sometimes we ignore; we find how much we love when it is truly taken from us. Over the years, Glennie learned to cope with this setback, and did not let it get in her way. There are people who would have given up; Glennie was not one of those people. Glennie found ways to express her thoughts and how she was feeling in the form of sounds. It likely helped her forget about her inability to hear and focus more on doing what she always wanted to do. Glennie is barefoot when she is performing and it helps her feel the music better, and helps her stay connected to the sounds. She is intrigued by the endless combination of sounds at her disposal, and she finds joy in exploring and finding a place for different types of sounds. Her whole life is about sound, and it gives her a
