1.1 ECM stands for every child matters. It is a UK government initiative for England and Wales that was launched in 2003. ECM was brought in partly because of Victoria Climbiѐ. They support children and young adults up to the age of 19 or 24 for those with disabilities. Its aims are for every child to have the support they need. Using the acronym SHEEP we can help to remember they key points they try to achieve.
S - Stay Safe
H - Be Healthy
E - Enjoy and Achieve
E - Economic well-being
P - Positive contribution
ECM is now called Help Children Achieve More.
Children Act 1989 was changed to Children Act 2004, which came in alongside the Ever Child Matters frame work, due to the lack of action taken against the Victoria Climbiѐ case. It’s changed the way in which schools address issues of care, welfare and discipline. It was also amended in 2006 to put more responsibility on local authorities. These involved; improve well-being for young children, and reduce inequalities, ensure that there is enough childcare to enable parents to work, and provide parents with information on childcare. Also to make sure that childcare providers are trained, and that under 5’s are introduced to the Early Years Foundation Stage. And reform the regulation system for childcare, with two new registers of childcare providers, to be run by Ofsted.
All schools must have an E-Safety coordinator that is not a member of the technical staff. They must ensure that inappropriate websites are blocked, and put age restrictions on and passwords to prevent children going on unnecessary websites. Parents/Carers should also ensure these restrictions are set on home computers. E-Safety helps make children aware of protecting themselves on the web by showing videos of how dangerous using the internet wrongly can be and providing the right information of what to do to protect them.
