Everyday Use Character Analysis
In the story, Everyday Use by Alice Walker; Dee is Maggie's sister and the daughter of the mother who is telling the story. Dee is a bold, and strong character in this story who has an uptight attitude. In this story, Dee is described as being lighter than Maggie in skin-tone, and nicer, fuller hair. Unlike Maggie, Dee did not really care for anything, nor did she have friends however, she did dress nice. I would describe Dee in this story as a bold, fearless girl that takes care of herself. Overall a nice person.
The mother talks about how Dee was determined. " ... Dee would stare down any disaster in her efforts. Her eyelids would not flicker for minutes at a time ... I often fought off the temptation to shake her" ( Walker,12). This
just shows how serious Dee was about anything. Her mother even felt like she hated Maggie by the looks on her face. There was also a house they lived in that caught fire when they were younger and Dee hated that house. Dee did not think twice about the fire; in fact, she watched the board of the house fall in while standing under a tree digging gum out. This just shows hour fearless Dee is and she can handle anything, especially if it is something she strongly dislikes.
Dee was then described as always wanting nice things. " At sixteen, she had her own style of her own: and knew exactly what her style was." ( Walker, 12). The mother expresses how she always wanted nice things when it came to the way she dressed. For example-- for graduations she wanted to wear a yellow organdy dress and had designed a outfit with black pumps from a old green suit her mother had been given. This describes that out side of being fear less she does know how to dress and take care of herself as a girl.
Dee is now grown and living on her own and still decides that if she if going to visit that she will not bring any friends with her. Knowing Dee as a character in the story, she does not have any friends however, people where impressed by her. Her mother said " fugitive boys in pink skirts, and nervous girls who never laughed." ( Walker 15). Describing the people she hung around because she were impressed by Dee in many ways such as: the words she said, her cute shape, and her scalding humor. Also going back to visiting their house, Dee wrote a letter to her mother stating that " No matter where they ' choose' to live, she will visit " although she knows the house is in the same condition as the last one. They knew Dee would want to tear that house down like the last one. This can conclude that she is a nice person to be around although the things she say can be very bold and demanding about certain things.

Since Maggie is more mild mannered is makes Dee seem a lot different than everybody else.
