Everyday Use Maggie's Character
People are people, no matter when or where they live. In “Everyday use”, Mama and her daughter have a complicated relationship because they cannot communicate. Communication is one of several issues faced by the characters. In “Everyday Use “, Mama’s character can be analyzed through her actions, strengths and weaknesses, and priorities.
Maggie’s actions say a lot about her character. First, Maggie’s character can be seen in how she stands. In the story it says, “She has been like this, chin on chest, eyes on ground, feet in shuffle” (110). This is important because her posture reveals she is a shy person. Another way Maggie’s character is shown is by the way she thinks about herself. It says in the story, “She knows she is not bright” (111). This shows that Maggie does not believe in herself being either mentally or physically bright. Lastly, another way Maggie shows her character is through how she feels about herself. One way Maggie shows how she cares is by the way she reacts to the quilt situation. In the story it says, “I heard something fall in the kitchen and a minute later the kitchen door slammed” (115). The quotes talk about what Mama’s doing here and in the text, Maggie was in the kitchen doing dishes when she heard so, the noise Mama hears is from Maggie which is her way of caring when Dee asks about the quilts. Something that Maggie also prioritizes is family heritage. In the Story she says, “I can meet Grandma Dee without the quilts” (115). This shows that Maggie cares and knows Grandma because she is willing to let Dee have the quilt and does not need objects to remember her.
