K-9 dogs also known as police dogs have evolved and changed over time. These dogs were used all the way back from modern time. Romans used dogs for mainly hunting and security. The Spanish also used them to assist in the war for finding mines, be on patrol, and even an a messenger.. About 1,500 dogs were being used in the Korean and Vietnam war. In a article Dogs for Law Enforcement John Ivey states “...the soldiers used these …show more content…
dogs to makes sure the caves were cleared and free of bobby traps”(Ivey 1). These dogs have many traits that even helped us in war. Dogs have been used for law enforcement for many years and the use of dogs for law enforcement in the united states began in 1970. The common dog used is the German Shepherd. Other breeds but not limited too are Dutch Shepherds, Labs, and Belgian Malinois. Not all of the dogs are used for the same duty. Many dogs are used to assist police for different purposes each knowing how to do one thing better than the other. With the time and money put into these dogs Ed Grabianowski gives us an estimate of 20,000 per dog just to train and obtain them ( Grabianowski 3). To find these dogs the Police departments look for the most easily trained and obedient dog. Some dogs can come from homes of families and even from a shelter. Not all dogs can fit the role of a K-9 but the selected few act as if this is what they were born to do it.
Police canine dogs can start their training up to 12-15 months as long as they are fully concentrated (Smith 2). These dogs are then put into long hours, days and months into training. The training consists of locating tools, firearm detention, criminal apprehension, etc. They are put through variety of tests such as using their strong keen smell to their best of their ability. Their sense of smell is so strong they can tell identical twins apart. This may fool an human and the naked eye but not the nose of a canine. The dogs are expected to perform well in various situations. So the bonder of the dog and K-9 play a very important role on training. Each dog is expected to cooperate very good with the handler. They need to be trained to follow commands and listen obediently when told. To start this the dog is trained and lives with the same handler throughout his whole police career. With this being done it gives the dog time to trust and work with his handler a lot well. So the dog will not be easily burnt out from all the work the training is taught to them more like a game. They play games of hide and seek with the smell of the nose. These dogs find the target and get rewarded after. The training for the dogs never stop. When the dogs are not on patrol they are training. That way they are ready for their next duty.
All the training does not consist of just the dog but the trainer themselves. The trainer undergoes training themselves to make sure they train the dog to meet the qualifications to become part of the police force. The handler and dog must also be able to pass the police test, which involves controlling the dog fully, even after giving the dog the attack command. The dog must stop immediately and fulfill any command it is given by the handler. There are specifications of training involved in using trained K9 police dogs in the airport, marine ports, railroads, in a metro station. There will be days when the dog simply is not successful. The trainer needs to be able to have patience. Becoming a handler also means bringing the new dog into the household which can lead to stress on the family. Some emergency calls have even happen in the middle of dinner and the family must be ready fo that. Overall the family needs to be able to welcome a canine into the home. The officer also is in charge of making sure the dog has food as well as the health of dog. Days off are not actually days off the dog needs to be training while he is not on a case. K-9 officers are called to more code 3 responses that means emergency lights and siren so driving technique is also very important. Many duties come with being a handler but having a partner so you can count on makes it worth the while.
A caines day would start off with getting ready for work and not just the officer gets ready but so does the K-9. The dog has to have certain collars he wears to get ready for his day. Then they start heading into the office for a meeting before the shift starts. What this means for the dog is treats and nap time. Now it's time for duty. The officers get calls when a K-9 might or is in need of use to the scene. Sometimes the suspects come out easily and well others, they run. Once a suspect runs and a K-9 is on the scene an officer gives the commands so the dog uses a “latching on method” where the dog takes a great hold onto the suspect until officers are able to detain them. With one command the dogs detach and let the officers do their work. Chef Owens informs us that the dogs are not always lead into a dangerous situation that officers themselves can not handle (Owens 4). The officers of course use the dogs but they make sure the situation is not that dangerous to where the dog will get hurt. You have to remember the dogs are the handler's best friend they are part of the family and the K-9s go home with them every night. The police dogs are also known as “force multipliers” which means with their speed and agility they do the work of half as many officers. Not all the time are K-9s used for police work but they are also family dogs as well. They have a “switch” so they know when it's time for work and when it time to just be a dog. Many of these dogs are used for social demonstration such as at churches, school etc. so they need to be social as well.
All police dogs have one similar purpose to protect and serve but not all dogs receive the exact same type of training and are used for the same purposes.
Yes all dogs are used for the police force but some are used for certain duties. One dog would be a Patrol dog and these dogs are used to protect their handler. When any aggressive move is made toward the officer the dog senses it and will attack. This type of dog can track a person. These dogs can smell a scent up to 8 hours old and perfume can not fool the nose of a hound. Another dog that is not quite similar to patrol dogs are Narcotic dogs these dogs are not trained to attack or be aggressive at all. These dogs are required to have patience and are able to work long period at a time. The k-9s are trained to find drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, heroin and that's just to name a few they find these drugs in all areas. Not all dogs are located and found with the police force but with the fire department as well. These dogs can tell officers where the fire was started and what caused it. During these cases many samples are taken by officers but with dogs time and money are saved because the dogs can smell for chemicals that are caused by a fire that way they can tell officers how it was caused. Lastly there are explosive detection dogs. The k-9Ps are trained to find odors of explosives, ammunition and even firearms. Not only can these dogs smell on the ground but they can also search on cruise ships and air lines. For these police jobs the dogs they use are mainly German Shepherds, Labradors, Golden retrievers and mixed breeds (Brown 6).All K9s are trained to a high level of obedience. They are expected to follow both verbal and hand commands of their handler. The dogs are able to be placed in a "down stay" while the ECO handler converses with the public, yet be ready for immediate recall if
necessary.
Police technology is growing replays throughout the police force. The latest devices help decrease crime and help the officers safe. You can find a K-9 in the back of a police cruiser once his job is now down. As he sits patiently there's no telling how hot the car is getting. The officers now have the scenario into their hands so the case is pretty busy. The Arizona Safety Department created a device to make sure the car does not overheat or make sure the dog does not get left in the car unintentionally. This device is attached around the neck and regulates the dog's body temperature and alerts the officers via email or text to let them know when the temperature reaches a serious condition. It also comes with a GPS to track the dog when he/she starts tracking that way the officers can lose sight of the dog but not the location. This helps make sure the dogs are safe and also not overworked. Having a K-9 living with you and working with you 24/7 can have a huge impact on his and the officer's life. The officer trains and sleep with that dog. That dog is your best friend. But what happens when his job in the police force is now over and you're still continuing? Retirement. Police K-9’s retire 10 years in age. At this point the handler chooses to keep the dog or give it up for adoption. Keeping the dog would be the first thought that comes through your head first. I mean he's been with you through everything and that can be a very emotional for the officer and dog. Not only do you just keep the dog but there are also more decisions you're gonna have to make with it. If the handler, which of course is the officer, decides to stay being a K-9 officer it would mean he/she would have two dogs. Sometimes having two dogs in the same holdhold may be a bit tricky. An instructor at the International K-9 conference states “As your old dog sees your new one going off to work in what used to be "his" car he might not take it too well” ( Grabianowski 1). The officer does not want his old dog getting too jealous where the dogs will start fighting. He needs to take into consideration, while balancing two K-9’s, that the dogs might get jealous and he needs to be able to control or prevent that. Having a K-9 that is very old in age will require vet bills making sure your buddy is in tip top shape as much as he can be. Keeping the dog the officer would have to be able to afford the vet bills only because the vet bills can be up too “$1900.00” ( Smith 8 ) . Vet bills are never cheap so those would have to be able to fit that into the officer's budget. Sadly the next option would be putting the K-9 up for adoption. In order to have a police K-9 adopted the family would have to meet certain qualifications. The dogs work until about age ten so they would have a little time left in his life so it can be very tricky even adopting a retired dog. All in all police dogs have made a great impact on the world and evolved over time with all the special traits and skills they carry. They have been used back when World War one was happening and now they are still used today. Many devices and technology has been created over the years to assist our working animals this not only helps them but helps our community as well. Not only do police officers help but so do our K-9’s working right beside them.
