Exam 1 – Essay Question Due Date: 10/2/14

ProPublica has a featured investigation on the issues involved with temporary labor in the US. It is located at http://www.propublica.org/series/temp-land. There are four feature stories “Temporary Work, Lasting Harm”, “US Lags Behind World in Temp Worker Protections”, “The Expendables: How the Temps Who Power Corporate Giants Are Getting Crushed”, “Taken for a Ride: Temp Agencies and ‘Raiteros’ in Immigrant Chicago”.
You should also read “The Rise of the Permanent Temp Economy” (available at http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/26/the-rise-of-the-permanent-temp-economy/)at the New York Times.
Read these articles and use the material in the articles to answer the following questions.
Conduct a structural functionalist analysis of temporary labor in the United States. How does temporary labor serve a positive function for society as a whole?
Conduct a functional analysis (Gans) of temporary labor in the United States. What are the positive functions of temporary labor? Who benefits from these positive functions? What are the negative functions? Who experiences these negative functions
Conduct a Marxist analysis of temporary labor in the United States. What is the role of social class in determining who benefits from temporary labor? The article “Taken for a Ride: Temp Agencies and ‘Raiteros’ in Immigrant Chicago” may be helpful in this analysis.

Costa informs us how often immigrants, and migrants with visas are mistreated and threaten, women are often used as sex slaves.     Migrant farmworkers, in the United States commonly facing structural violence, that’s committed by industries or their employers. Structural violence can be when a worker is prevented their basic needs often due to their identity or class status.
