I. From Resistance to Revolution
1. What does it mean to rebel?
i. People that come from nothing and are angry and want more. Revolution is inevitable and Congress is still trying to negotiate peace they are trying to find a peaceful way out of things in a way that doesn’t lead to war
B. Tea Act (1773)
1. Tea is the most important consumer product, it defines the colonists. Part of the monopoly of the East India company, sustains protests all over the colonies. Its not the tea that’s the problem, but the threat of tax on the colonists
2. Boston Tea Party – 30-60 men disguised as Mohawk Indians stormed the tea ships and dumped 90,000 pounds of tea into Boston Harbor. The Boston tea party mobilized Bostonians and spread strenuous tea resistance to other colonies
C. Coercive Acts (1774)
1. The protests of the Boston Tea Party shocked Parliament so much that they led to a series of acts
2. The Coercive acts closed the port of Boston and reorganized the Massachusetts government, putting more authority
3. These acts imposed royal control over local courts, authorized troops to forcibly live in houses and buildings
D. First Continental Congress
1. The Coercive Acts prompted reps of 12 colonies to unite more than ever before; continental congress proceeded to appeal King George III to check abuses of Parliamentary authority. EVEN colonial independence was discussed even though only few delegates approved
2. King believes the colonists are the ones that want too much, not Parliament, the acts represent a legitimate set of laws onto his citizens
3. Interpretation of these acts between the king and the colonists are widely different

i. Minutemen: Organized, average colonists coming together to form militia ii. General Gage decided to crackdown on Whig activities in concord where the assembly was meeting illegally and where he suspected colonists had a stockpile of weapons and gunpowder. He assembled his soldiers
