Casey was not just a figure of reassurance he was the main character, and he had a big impact along with the story.
For example the audience yelled "Fraud" "But one scornful look from Casey and the audience was awed"! The author made the reader engaged to think that Casey was great and that he was going to hit the ball on the last strike,But instead he missed. Another example, as seen from the text was "And they knew that Casey wouldn't let that ball go by again". That proves Casey's role in the story along with being the main character.
