Example Of Sarcasm

Sarcasm requires a special type of thinking ability because of its complex use of word choice, body language, and context used to create humor, satire, or irony. As sarcasm revolves around the ability to distinguish between what is being said and how it is being said, it is then more likely to be practiced by adolescents and adults than young children. This is due to the fact that adolescents have the ability to think in multidimensional terms which according to the textbook Adolescent Development, means "children tend to think about things one aspect at a time" and "adolescents can see things through more complicated lenses" (60). This new change in cognation is especially appealing to adolescents because it allows them to explore a new type of understanding that is similar to that of decoding a secret language.
For example, when I was about 7 years old, my teenage brother at the time would always watch the Simpsons. I would watch it with him, but I simply saw silly looking cartoon characters. The simple fact that one had a big belly and burped a lot was sufficient to entertain me for a short period. However, I remember my brother laughing hysterically all throughout the episodes, but at the time I didn't really see what was that funny. However, once I turned about 12-13 years old I started to notice things I hadn't before, thus the show became more entertaining for me.
