This year was Canada’s 150th celebration, but should Canada really be celebrating all the wrongs we’ve done in just 150 years? They range from detention camps to abusive “schools”. Our history isn’t as pretty as we thought it was. Canada should not be proud of the first 150 years, due to the wrongs of the citizens that came before them. Since workers were needed for the Canadian Pacific Railway, about 15,000 Chinese immigrants came over and helped with the railway in 1885 (8). In spite of their contributions, they were only paid half the amount the white people were (9). Sadly, when the railroad and the cheap labour was completed the government no longer needed them and the Chinese had received a crazy amount of backlash (9). Not only were the jobs impossible, the Chinese were the only race who had to pay a fee to enter Canada (1). For every Chinese child, parent and relative had to pay extreme taxes to enter Canada (10). At first it was 50 dollars, then later it was raised to 100, and finally it was 500 dollars (8). By the time it was 1923, about 81,000 Chinese immigrants had paid the head tax and they had a certificate to prove they’ve paid (11). In addition to having unbelievably high taxes and impossible tasks, they were also discriminated. The purpose of the Chinese Head Tax was to discourage Chinese immigration (9). Even though they had to pay a tax, Chinese immigration was banned until 1947 (8). Not only were they the only race that had to pay the tax many white Canadians were hostile towards the chinese saying that they were “undesirable” citizens (12). In conclusion, the citizens of Canada have been very hostile towards the Chinese making them pay extreme taxes, giving them impossible jobs and discriminating
