Throughout my research I have found many different explanations for what an allegory actually is, but what it all boils down to is an allegory is when someone uses a very deep and complex metaphor to say what they mean. Brown goes off into the woods where he meets the traveler and that is when we are really able to see that maybe he is a lost soul and very much at battle with good and evil. He is told by the traveler of the history of evil in his family and he is very confused as to rather or not to believe him and then he sees for himself that maybe Faith and the rest of his neighbors and friends are not as pure and good as he thought. It is almost like Brown has a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other. The devil telling him to buy into what he is seeing at the evil meeting and the angel telling him that this just couldn’t be true. Brown is not really a man of action and just sort of sits back and watches the show, but in the end he is left with devastation and pessimism. Young Goodman Brown allows what happened on his journey that night to haunt him for the rest of his life and makes him bitter and suspicious of everyone. Goodman brown no longer has “Faith” in anyone that he once cared for. The transformation of Brown makes him an inconsistent character because he goes from being trusting and loving and kind to bitter and suspicious and not really being close to anyone, not even his precious
