Atticus’ parenting style was to let the children do things on their own and raise them to stand up for what’s right. He teaches them to respect their elders and that everyone has reasoning to their actions, good or bad. One of the times Atticus teaches the children to respect their elders is when he tells them, "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.”, regarding Mrs. Dubose. Atticus’ parenting style benefits the kids greatly because they learn to be independent, stand up for what they believe in, and they learn how to resolve problems on their own. The kids also address him by his first name which shows the reader that they look up to him as a person and not a parent
figure. He also educates the kids at home on things that aren’t taught in school, such as morality and self-respect. This proves to benefit the children when they are in school and they are more advanced than the other children, even though Scout’s teacher does not approve.
