Even in modern times instead of calling them warriors they call them soldiers. In Beowulf the relationship of “comitatus” is vital because of the way that the relationship is first brought about. The way the “comitatus” is born is by installing fear or respecting by the King to the warriors. The first way we get to know Beowulf is through his own speech and actions. We learn of Beowulf's amazing heroism while he is speaking to the Danes about Grendel. Even though he foresees his own death, he continued with the attempt to battle Grendel. "Let me live in greatness and courage, or here in this hall welcome by death!" This also further develops the theme: courage and bravery in the face of impending doom. Although Beowulf knew he was going to die, he went on. The second way Beowulf's character is introduced is by the way other characters respond to his actions and words. During the conflict with Unferth and Beowulf, Unferth validates how prideful Beowulf is. "All older and wiser heads warned you not to, but no one could check such pride." The third way Beowulf's character is developed is through the authors description of Beowulf's actions, words, or thoughts. "The victory over Grendel is celebrated with feasting, drinking, and the giving of gifts to Beowulf and his followers." This quote from the poem shows how well respected Beowulf was by Hrothgar's…

Beowulf is an epic poem whose author is anonymous, but was translated into many editions by many translators. Comitatus is defined as a bond between a Lord and his warriors that neither will leave the battlefield without the other or avenged their kinsmen if he is killed. Comitatus is seen often through Beowulf where Grendel’s mother seeks revenge for the death of Grendel, where Beowulf goes into battle against the dragon with the aid of Wiglaf, and where the king’s guards sleep in the mead hall. Why is comitatus an essential part of the Germanic culture?…

Beowulf's traits, good and bad, define him as a hero by Anglo-Saxon standards. But his arrogance, greed and selfishness contradict the modern, humanistic image of a hero. When it comes to Beowulf getting what he wants, nothing will stand between him and his goal. No amount of lives lost is too many for Beowulf, and the high cost to others only contributes to his glory. In his own time and culture, he was the ultimate hero of legend because he saved his people from monsters attacking them. But he falls far short when compared to today’s standards of selflessness, in which heroes are defined by risking their lives for others, and thus valuing their own less. Today’s heroes know that he may not make it out of the…

Alternatively, one might make a division of the text into two parts, examining youth and old age as the two distinctive phases of Beowulf’s life. Along these lines, the gap of fifty years between the first two conflicts and the last marks the dividing line. One of the main thematic points highlighted by such a division is the difference in responsibilities of the warrior and of the king. As a young warrior, Beowulf is free to travel afar to protect others, but as an old king, he must commit himself to guard his own people. Additionally, whereas Beowulf focuses on the heroic life early on, seeking to make a name for himself, he must focus on fate and the maintenance of his reputation late in life. The obsession with patriarchal history manifests itself throughout Beowulf, which opens by tracing Hrothgar’s male ancestry and constantly refers to characters as…

Throughout the book, Beowulf demonstrates his honorable behavior on his adventures. He exhibits honor when he decides that an evil-doing man should still get a proper burial, and “[Buries] Unferth’s head. He [is] a person to be pitied.” (42). This example shows that Beowulf is honorable because he shows pity for a slain man, even though the man vas extremely rude and uncouth. Also, he is honorable because after he won spoils from killing the monster Grendel, he proves his loyalty by declaring, “You are my king and I am your man. All that I [win], I [win] as your retainer.” (83). This quote shows that Beowulf is honorable, because instead of keeping the treasures he wins, he gives them to his king.
