Examples Of Conflict In The Great Gatsby
When Great Gatsby died in the book it changes every scenario in the story. My first conflict is what happened to Great Gatsby, there are many situations that lead to Gatsby's death that is caused by Tom. Tom did the wrong mistake in Gatsby's death was that he told George Wilson, that when Myrtle was murdered it was Gatsby who was driving so he believes that Gatsby was the man that was having an affair with his wife Myrtle and that he was the one who killed her. So Wilson murdered Gatsby in thinking he did it.

My second Conflict is that Great Gatsby had an affair with Tom Buchanan, because we see in chapter 7 where they both have a fight over at the hotel and also at the mansion where Tom finds out that she had told him and she loved Gatsby,

Fitzgerald illustrates his ideas on the differences between the wealthy and the poor through powerful diction, and more importantly, the juxtaposition of the various elements that make up their lives. A specific juxtaposition that I found truly relayed his stance on the differences between the wealthy and the poor was the juxtaposition of color. For instance, Fitzgerald elucidates the lively, detail-oriented, and expressive nature of the wealthy lifestyle through the elements of color when describing the Buchanan’s mansion. A “cheerful red and white Georgian mansion”, the “reflected gold” from the windows, and the “bright rosy-colored” hallway are all descriptors Fitzgerald uses in this instance. The constant reference to colors associated…

It wasn’t the soft, ethereal glow of dawn’s early light peeping through the ill-fitting curtains that gently lured Tom from a restless night’s sleep. It wasn’t the promise of a new day, free from the nightmares that still plagued his tortured mind or the pleasing chirrup of the house sparrows greeting the sun with their morning song of joy. It was something more physical, something visceral, an inherent perception of a long-forgotten pleasure slowly rising from within.…

In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel, The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is portrayed as being an admirable, wealthy, kind, and genuinely impressive man. However, that being said, he is also portrayed as pretentious, deceptive, criminal, and most importantly to the plot, completely insatiable. Even though the novel’s narrator, Nick Carraway, heavily sympathizes with Gatsby, he has many character flaws that ultimately assure the failure of his “dream”, and even lead to his untimely demise.…

In The Great Gatsby by F. Scoot Fitzgerald a phrase that beats in Nick’s mind is, “There are only the pursued, the pursuing, the busy, and the tired,” and it is easily relatable to all of the main characters in the novel. When Nick says this he is saying that every person fits into one of these categories. The pursued are the people everyone is after. Daisy is a key example of this. The pursuing are the ones always chasing something, like Jay Gatsby, Tom Buchanan, and possibly even Nick. The busy are constantly doing something like Jordan Baker. And finally, the tired are the ones exhausted from being involved in several circumstances, like Nick Carraway.…

The turning point in ‘The Great Gatsby’ happens in Chapter Seven, in the Plaza hotel in New York City. This is when Gatsby’s American Dream starts to crumble around him because Tom has unearthed the truth about Gatsby’s wealth and causes Daisy to run back to Tom. Even though it is evident that Gatsby’s dream is not going to come true, Gatsby still believes he will fulfil it. The conflict between Gatsby and Tom has been apparent since their first meeting; their main conflict is over Daisy. In Chapter Seven the tension comes to a tipping point, caused by Gatsby forcing Daisy to lie to Tom that she never loved him and also by Toms unveiling of the ‘real’ Gatsby. Gatsby is rejected by Daisy when she tells him that she ‘loved him too’ when he hears this he feels his idea that Daisy only married Tom for money not for love is shattered and his disappointment is evident. “Oh, you want too much!” Daisy is overwhelmed by Gatsby’s demands saying that he holds her to such a high standard that she will not be able to achieve. Daisy is also weak and cannot live with Tom’s revelations about Gatsby.…

The inevitable end of Daisy and Gatsby relationship was foreshadowed early on by Daisy’s actions and Nick’s observations. Daisy has always known about all of Tom’s affairs or “spree’s” as he calls them. She shows this early on to Nick after dinner when he has first came to the West Egg. Daisy admits to Nick that “I’ve had a very bad time” (16) and that when her daughter was born “Tom was God knows where” (17). Even with Daisy and Tom picking at each other and arguing nonstop through dinner, Nick observes as he is leaving that they are still a unit, “stood side by side” (19), as they walked him to the door.…

The Great Gatsby portrays a variety of realities that happen in everyday life and that are at times not spoken of but need attention called out to, realities such as dishonesty and affairs, are delicate topics that Fitzgerald brings up to the audience. Dishonesty and affair issues are seen through Tom and the involvement he has with another woman while married to Daisy since he openly admits it to Nick, ordering “We’re getting off!’ he insisted ‘I Want you to meet my girl” (928). Of course, when he said ‘girl’ he was not referring to Daisy, he was cynically accepting the affair he was having with her and in way, one might say, proud by the tone he used, almost excitedly saying it. Fitzgerald does not hide the fact that it is an issue that needs some calling out and in the process also breaks the stereotype that it is only men who are disloyal since, Myrtle, Tom’s “girl” is also a married woman having an affair on her husband with…

The medieval times brought us men in shining armor and women captured by dragons for those knights to rescue. It also brought upon the dark ages which unfortunately risen the popularity of the lunatic (insane) asylums. In those days, people who were determined to be mentally ill were given a place to stay where they were treated for their illness. In todays’ society we have gone away from institutionalizing individuals because of mental illness and looked toward alternative ways of treatment most notably by prescribing psychiatric medication. This tactic was implemented to put the mentally ill back out onto the street and minimize the overcrowding that was happening in the institutions. Today most of the “asylums” have been shut down and for some reason most of the mentally ill are being housed in our state and federal prisons.…
