What does it mean to truly eat ethically? Is it even possible? My answer yes, but in moderation. To be ethical means to be morally alert while pursuing an action. So connecting this to food I would say that eating ethically means to consider economics, conveniency, nutrition, and morals while purchasing or consuming a food. What I would consider an ethical meal is something that includes a balance of protein and vegetables. These items could possibly be purchased at a local farmers market that one could walk to in hopes of decreasing their carbon footprint. By purchasing food from a local market you would be supporting farmers as well as receiving fresh produce. However, I understand that this option is not always
available or feasible from situation to situation. So with this in mind it is still possible to eat ethically even if it is not always from a farmers market. When taking your next trip to the local grocery store consider these three things: Will eating this make me happy? Will consuming this food benefit my health? Is this an economical choice? With keeping these three simple questions in mind it will help balance your diet to be more ethical. My suggestion for everyone is to keep their morals in mind as justification for whatever they choose to eat.
Ethical Meal
For my ethical meal I will be making an avocado and egg toast. This will reflect my position statement because all my ingredients will either be locally grown, organic, and/or convenient to purchase. The eggs and avocados from my recipe were purchased from a local farmers market. The bread from my recipe was purchased at local bakery that I often go to. By purchasing my foods from local places I’m supporting small business and assuring my self of fresh produce.
