I observed Mrs. Ball’s 7th grade science class at Helen Tyson Middle School on Thursday November 5, 2015. The classroom had a great climate and was decorated with interesting scientific educational material. She had the desks set up in organized rows with two kids per table. This set up allowed for less interaction between the kids because they were so spaced out, which seemed to keep them on task. The dynamics in the classroom were great. She connected well with each student and was interested in what they had to say. She was very in control of the class and the students seemed to respond well to her. During this quarter, I got an opportunity to become a math tutor for 7th grade students at KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy. This middle school is located at downtown San Diego, it is opposite to a superior court where always have few polices walk around this area and enclosed few apartments which is a pretty safe and quiet area. I found that it is rarely to see a white people in KIPP; Although most of the students in KIPP are from low income family, I felt like I was always energetic when I entered KIPP since most of the students are always happy, active and brisk. Responsive to participant needs. On their first day in our program, I make every effort to me4et and greet our clients, the parents as well as the children. I ask the parents if they need any special requirements, accommodations, or modifications to better service their children. Before the child enters the classroom, I make sure they know they are included. I post a welcome sign for each new child and their cubby is already labeled so they know where to store their belongings. Once the child has entered the classroom, I take another child and introduce them and then we all take a tour of the classroom. This gives us a time to get to know each other, I can find out their likes and dislikes, observe their interactions with other children, and begin to plan their development.…
I provide a positive relationship with the child through daily routines and interactions allowing growth in in their development of self and others. Each morning I ensure that I greet each child and parent when they arrive. In greeting the child I will always address the child by his/her name and encourage the other children to say good morning. I feel this gives the child and parent a sense of trust and security for a safe and secure environment and this acknowledgment makes the child feel special and welcome in the class. In the mornings I also have open centers where the children can go around and greet the other student and to move and work at their own pace. I also find some way to praise the class and each child daily. I provide opportunities for the children to always feel successful and proud of themselves. As I referenced before my passion and the enjoyment I feel when I’m around children peaked my interest in this career field. I volunteered at an elementary school during the fall in the afternoons. In Aire Libre Elementary School the After the Bell program, kids stayed after school to do homework or get extra lessons in subjects they were struggling in. When I first started I mainly worked with first and second grader, the group was very small condensed with first and second so I interacted with each one. For the Infant and Toddler Curriculum class, I was assigned the toddler classroom at Montessori Day School to complete my 24 hours of observation. The classroom had ten children with two teachers. The classroom was divided into four sections by two-shelf bookshelves. There were two tables, large carpets, and small white rugs where the students could take their work to complete. Because Montessori Day School is passionate about the Montessori method, the children do not simply wander the classroom and play with toys. They choose activities that the teachers refer to as “work” to complete. These works help develop the child’s social, emotional, intellectual, and motor skills. The teachers are able to work in groups or provide individualized instruction, so the child can learn at their own pace.…
I have previously observed at schools, but did not have to keep democratic standards or their race and ethnicity into consideration. In having to think about a democratic environment, I got to focus on more things other than just the curriculum being taught and whether I liked how the seats were set up. I actually really enjoyed shadowing Mrs. C, since I felt I could relate to her Hispanic students due to me being the same ethnicity. Even though I did not have to stay the whole school day, during the majority of my visits I would leave at 3:25PM when the students were dismissed. During one day of classroom service, I had to leave early and found myself wanting to stay the whole day. Through classroom service, I was able to help students correct their work and got the opportunity to help students who needed help with math. During my observation at the preschool here at Harper, I looked around and realized a lot of similarities and differences it has; compared to other daycare and preschool centers. The age of children in the room I observed was ages 3-5 with one lead teacher, and depending on the ratio of how many kids showed up on that day, about three or four helping teachers. The program was set up to a very open, happy and overwhelming setting. Every furniture and object in the room had a sign saying what it was, and then underneath the typed out word was the children’s way of writing what the object was. For example, a book shelf was in the corner of the room; on the book shelf was the word printed out “Book Shelf”. Underneath the typed out sign was Childs handwriting of the word “Book Shelf” and then a picture of the children at the book shelf showing what it is used for. During the months of September and October this semester I spent time at two different schools in four different classrooms. Being able to observe different classes and teachers at Westside Junior High and South Live Oak Elementary was a very new and exciting experience for me since I can’t say I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. My experiences at these schools gave me a better insight into the differences between schools, classrooms, and teachers. I had the opportunity to observe at the Isabel Patterson Child Development Center in Long Beach. It was my first time observing in this center so I had to be there before my observation time, which was at 2:30pm. Once, I entered the building the atmosphere was welcoming and enjoyable. The children I observed where around the ages of three to five. During my observation there was twenty-eight children and five teachers present. The building was all wooden on the inside and at the entrance there was a welcome wall colored with a rainbow. There were art projects hanged on the walls as well as learning material. In Early Childhood Education 101 I learned a lot of new information. One major topic that gave me a better understanding when it comes to being a provider or teacher was chapter 5 Observation, Assessment, and Documentation. In a past education class that I have taken, we had to spend 30hr observing a classroom and teacher. Now after taking this class I feel that my observation was not done the correct way. I have learned that when documenting what I have observed, I am to write down exaely what I see and not what I think is going one. Interviewing my son’s preschool teacher, Ms. Contreras, was a wonderful experience. I learned so much about the field and I was able to connect understand her as not only an educator but as a person; as the type of person who does well in this career field. Ms. Contreras is a California state preschool teacher and has been for 20 years. She holds an AA and a BS in Early Childhood Development and loves her job very much, and has decided to stay at the preschool level until she retires. Like any educator, she believes that it is important for parents to be involved with their children’s education. She encourages parents to come and volunteer whenever they are able, and has monthly parent meeting so that the parents are up to date with what is going on in the class room. To Ms. Contreras, the most important thing about being an early childhood educator is that you are an advocate; and advocate for children and their education. That you have and need to understand that children are all different and unique and they all deserve to be in a preschool program no matter what their income or background. Her favorite thing about being a teacher is the innocence of the children at this age; she loves how pure the minds are of her students are. She wishes she can change the fact that preschool is only three hours long, but with state funding so low, that is all she is able to do, and less assessing. She feels that is keeps her from understanding her students and attending to what they need help in. Family is very important to Ms. Contreras so when she had her children, she knew that she needed a career that will work around her children, thus leading her to pick the field in education.
