Washington Elementary School Observation
Washington Elementary School is located in West Orange, New Jersey in a neighborhood where mostly African American and Hispanic businesses and people were surrounding the area. As I arrived to the school or left, I usually only saw minorities in the surrounding neighborhood. This correlated with the students I saw in the classroom I observed, and throughout the school. In the classroom there was a total of 17 students, all of which were minorities. Ten of the students are Hispanic and seven are African American. I did not see too many White or Asian students throughout the school, or in the neighborhood. However, the racial and ethnic demographics for West Orange showed that the majority of the population is White. Statistics on race and ethnicity show that 62.1% of West Orange identify as being White, 17.1% as being Black, 10% as being Hispanic, 8.1% as being Asian, 2.4% as being two …show more content…
I have previously observed at schools, but did not have to keep democratic standards or their race and ethnicity into consideration. In having to think about a democratic environment, I got to focus on more things other than just the curriculum being taught and whether I liked how the seats were set up. I actually really enjoyed shadowing Mrs. C, since I felt I could relate to her Hispanic students due to me being the same ethnicity. Even though I did not have to stay the whole school day, during the majority of my visits I would leave at 3:25PM when the students were dismissed. During one day of classroom service, I had to leave early and found myself wanting to stay the whole day. Through classroom service, I was able to help students correct their work and got the opportunity to help students who needed help with math. Visiting Washington Elementary School was a good way for me to gain experience in a classroom, through both shadowing and doing some hands on work with the

    Shades Of White Summary

Shades of White is an ethnographic study of two high schools. One, "Valley Groves High School," was suburban, and the "whitest" high school in the region. Here the student body was comprised of non-Hispanic whites (83 percent), Hispanics (7 percent), Asians (5 percent), Filipinos (2 percent), and African Americans (2 percent). The other, "Clavey High," was metropolitan and more thoroughly multiracial--African American (54 percent), Asian American (23 percent), white (12 percent), Hispanic (8 percent), Filipino (2 percent), Pacific Islander (1 percent), and Native American (1 percent). Perry examines the making and living of whiteness in school life, asking about its formation through white students' interactions with one another and with peers of color. In this book the schoolyard is as important as are school curriculum, faculty, and administrators. Meanwhile, the familial and larger social contexts from which students arrive to complete each school day are deemed not so much stable, preexisting settings, as sites in relation to which selves and others must be reconceived and remade.…

During this quarter, I got an opportunity to become a math tutor for 7th grade students at KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy. This middle school is located at downtown San Diego, it is opposite to a superior court where always have few polices walk around this area and enclosed few apartments which is a pretty safe and quiet area. I found that it is rarely to see a white people in KIPP; Although most of the students in KIPP are from low income family, I felt like I was always energetic when I entered KIPP since most of the students are always happy, active and brisk. The classrooms in KIPP are conducive to learning because there have lots of test paper with 90 scores or up pasted around the wall, and also lots of posters about math too. Each…

The important of cultural diversity in Maryland is on the rise. Attending a school with a diverse student body can help prepare your child for citizenship in a multicultural democracy. As the United States become a more culturally and ethnically diverse nation, public schools are becoming more diverse, too. According to an article “Cultural Diversity” the article states that “The Census Bureau project that by the year 2100, the United States minority population will become the majority with non-Hispanic whites making up only 40% of the United States population” (Cultural Diversity, 2012.) There is no doubt that students will need to learn how to interact in a diverse environment. Jean Snell, is the clinical professor of teacher education at the University of Maryland, believes cultural diversity enhances the school experience. He states that “There is a richness that comes from students working side by side with others who are not of the same cookie-cutter mode” (Cultural Diversity, 2012.)…

I had chosen Spencer Elementary school, it is located on Spencer rd and it is in the Livingston county area. Spencer elementary is a regular public school and it has about 27.10 teachers, 440 students and the student teacher ratio is 16.24. As I look how the children are enrolled into this elementary, I am in total shock on how they are enrolled by race and gender. As I looked at enrollment by race, I had see that 415 children in the school were whites, there were 4 blacks, 5 Asian/ Pacific Islander and 13 Hispanics. According to the enrollment by gender there are 229 males and 211 females at Spencer elementary. Then I looked at how many children are in each grade at Spencer, in the kindergarten class there are 79 children, in the first grade their is 116, second grade has 83, third grade has 69 and fourth grade has 93 students. Spencer is a title 1 school, and it offers free lunches to 62 students and even offers reduce price lunches for about 14 students that attend to Spencer…

I have had the opportunity to go to two middle schools due to moving locations. This paper is going to be based on my experiences at Hermosa Middle School in Farmington, New Mexico. Since, this where I started caring more about my education and I can relate more to this placement. To begin with, Hermosa Middle School serves grade from 6th-8th. The demographic in this school is about 42% Caucasian, 31% Hispanic, 23% Native-American, 2% Asian, and 2% African-American. Notice, that there is a high population of Hispanics, I believe that this is why I started to be more involve at school. Prior to moving to Farmington, New Mexico; I lived and attended a junior high school in Huntington, Utah where 5% were Hispanic. I can honestly state, “That Hermosa Middle School is a contemporary developmentally responsive middle schools”. I quote this because I can point out the differences between what both schools had offered me as a student.…

Introduction to the Action Plan: Welcome to my action plan! This curricular approach to creating an anti-racist classroom experience was designed for four ninth grade classes at Malden High School in Malden, Massachusetts. The lessons attached to this action plan are anchored in the Massachusetts Common Core Curriculum Frameworks (2010). Upon first glance at the demographics of Malden High School it is easy to assume that the school has successfully integrated various racial minority and majority groups into its system (African American or Black - 22.2%, Asian - 22.7, Hispanic or Latino - 17.6%, Multi-race, Non-Hispanic - 2.7%, Native American - 0.6%, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander - 0.1%, White - 34.2%). However, there is still a lack of knowledge among students regarding their own racial identity and the experiences of others of different race and ethnic groups. In Northeastern University’s Race & Ethnicity course the idea of “colorblindness” was discussed at length as being something as powerfully ineffective as racism itself. At Malden High School students of differing racial groups sort of “coexist,” which is something I hope this action plan will begin to change through students’ awareness of racial identity development. Fortunately, the 9th grade curriculum for…

The increase in Hispanics have impact our school enrollment. This requires educating staff to understand this new culture of students. We have made adjustments to enrollment documents. Many Hispanic students do not have birth certificates, social security numbers and immunization records. In addressing our African American students, we visit the neighborhoods of our students to get a better understanding of their culture. The principal did a staff tour of all the neighborhoods that feds into our high school. This is an enlightening…

At Newport High School, all freshmen are required to run four miles as part of the mandatory physical education class. This acts as a measure of improvement in the students’ stamina and speed after two and a half months of training and conditioning in winter. The aim of this exercise is to run 16 laps around the track at Newport, with each lap being counted as it was completed with a popsicle stick. Students are graded through a rubric including total time taken, number of laps completed, and whether or not a student walks. This assignment accounts for 10% of all students’ grades in the class, making it the most important task of the entire year.…

The past three years has seen a transition to CCSSM by Redlands USD, and the middle school I teach at is no exception. Clement Middle School currently educates one thousand and twenty–seven, sixth through eighth grade learners in a Redlands vicinity. Although the school attends to learners of diverse backgrounds, sixty–nine percent are Hispanics, eighteen percent are Caucasians, and the remaining thirteen percent are Asians, Blacks or African American, and American Indian or Alaskan Native. About seventy–one percent of the student population participates in the free and reduced lunch program, and are of low socioeconomic status.…
