Ever since, the guilt inside him has taken over his entire life, and his mindset of who he was as a person. Amir needed Hassan to give him pain because he could not bear it himself. Hassan being the loyal friend he was to Amir, did not understand what Amir wanted from him. Hassan once again punished himself for Amir’s actions, which ruined him even more.
Another example of Amir’s guilt was when Amir went back to Afghanistan to visit Rahim Khan when he was very ill, Rahim Khan asked a favor of Amir. He asked Amir to go back and get Sohrab, Hassan’s son, and to get him from the orphanage back in Kabul. Amir told Rahim Khan over and over he could not be the one to do it. Amir then said “You have always thought to too highly of me” and Rahim responded “And you’ve always been too hard on yourself” (Hosseini, 2003, p. 222). This is the moment when Amir knew the guilt had taken over him ever since he was a boy. He was not the only one to notice what has been going on with him.
