In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, “A hero isn’t measured by the size of their strength, but by the size of their heart.” Anyone can be a hero. People judge others from the outside not the inside. They judge them by their looks and in the end they don’t really know who that person is deep down inside.
First of all, Johnny is an outstanding example of a hero. Johnny has a bumpy road relationship with his parents. Johnny is beat by his father and ignored by his mother. Johnny actually feels something when he is being beat because it’s the only time he feels like his parents know that he is there.(ch.3&4) Johnny wanted to kill himself because of his parents. Johnny didn’t though
because he had a family that he knows he can count on which was the greasers. Johnny’s letter to Ponyboy stated “ I don’t mind dying now. It’s worth it. It’s worth saving those kids. Their lives are worth more than mine, they have more to live for.” Johnny doesn’t regret saving those kids in the church fire.(ch.12 pg. 178) Johnny has gone through a lot in his life. He was a hero to those kids and just because he was a greaser didn’t change that. Johnny risked his own life and safety for those kids in the church, instead of just walking away and letting them die. Johnny has always been in a rough patch but he always seems to make it through.
Next, Dally risked his life for the greasers when he tried to bluff the police with an unloaded gun. Dally wanted to die to be with Johnny . Johnny is the only one that Dally has ever truly loved and cared about.(ch.10 pg.154) Dally loved Johnny more than anyone or anything. Everyone saw Dally as a hoodlum. Everyone said he died a hoodlum but to me he is a hero. All throughout chapter 10 Dally had a rough time dealing with Johnny’s death. Dally wanted to be with him. Dally has had his rough patches in life like everyone else has.(ch.10) Dally died gallantly , he might have made some bad mistakes but who hasn’t! He was always there for his friends no matter what. Dally is as much an ideal person than anyone. He is always there for others even after he had made some bad choices.
Throughout the story there was one more person that stands out as a superstar and hero. That person is Darry. Darry is tough and strong, and a big part of the story. In chapter 4 when Pony comes home late from the park, Darry was worried and and put his hands on Pony, but it was a mistake, he didn’t mean to. Darry had a lot of ups and downs with his family. Darry loves his family but they have their own rough spots but always get through it. In chapters 10 & 11 when Johnny dies and after the rumble, darry really shows his true compassion for his family. When pony gets hurt and gets a concussion Darry really steps up to both of his brothers. Darry has stepped up. When his parents passed away he quit school and took on the responsibility of both his brothers. Soda and Pony have their brother as their hero. Without Darry the boys would have been taken from their family.
In the Outsiders there are heros. Anyone can be a hero by their strength but most importantly their heart. These people are heros in their own way. Heroes aren’t just marked by anyone, they become heroes on their own.
