I have never had a clear idea of who I want to be or why I have chosen a certain area of study, but I have always liked school, learning, reading books and getting to know about different topics. As you might remember, I was raised in El Salvador and I always attended a small public school. My school finally got a library when I was in second grade and I felt that it was time to choose a book of my interest. I chose the book “Peter Pan in Scarlet” without knowing who Peter Pan or Wendy were but as soon as I finished it I wanted to read some more. As access to books became wider, we would start to get assignments to read one or two books during the school year. However, some kids would choose not to read anything and some friend would come to me so I could summarize the book before a quiz or discussion. I am not going to lie; I hated the feeling of not knowing how to communicate during class. I decided that communicating in a whole different language was my next big challenge. Furthermore, I started going into workbook exercises, notetaking and ultimately reading English books. My English professor Miss Blanqui made us read a book of our choice monthly. The assignment also included a written summary of the book and an oral presentation in front of the class. Miss Blanqui’s assignments were always fun and interactive. I remember she also asked us to keep a journal so we could become better writers and it was amazing to see how my writing skills improved and how with her feedback helped me stop making certain mistakes.
