The media did portray this crime as heinous and did made people aware that the “white middle class female” is capable to commit a crime just as the “black lower class female.” Even though society mostly sees African American women as more ‘criminal’ than other races it should not be the case but it is like that. According to Chesney-lind, M. & Eliason, M. (2006), “The construction of some women as ‘bad’, particularly African American girls and women, supports racist notions that are arguably at the core of US culture” (37). Society has manipulated the face of the criminal woman and how she is “suppose” to look like but that is not true. Cargill is the other face of the criminal woman, she is white and not black and she is the ‘bad’ girl (woman). She is paying for her crime just as any other criminal out there it should not matter whether her skin color is white or black, it’s still a…
Many Chinese mothers and Americanized daughters have trouble understanding each other and this problem can only be solved through accepting each other's values and their differences. In the chapter,Two Kinds, from the book "The Joy Luck Club" by Amy Tan exposes the values of a Chinese mother, Suyuan and her Americanized daughter, Jing-mei about living in America. After seeing many articles and stories about prodigies, Suyuan innocently believes her daughter can be one too. At first, Jing-mei was ecstatic about the idea but through constant disappointment from her mother, Jing-mei became idiotically determined to disappoint her mother even more. Pursuing this further, Suyuan thought Jing-mei can be a virtuoso pianist…
People often become so accustomed to the lifestyle they live, that they do not put much thought into the different customs right under their nose. People as a whole, frequently become consumed in their own lives, forgetting that other ways of life do exist. China is one of the most populated countries in the world, yet many people do not know of their unique and interesting culture. The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan displays the Chinese culture throughout the novel by telling different stories from both Chinese mothers and their American daughters. The destiny of a Chinese person, the traditions they have, and variety of lifestyles found in the country, are only part of what makes up the culture of China.…
Violence and human cruelty are two horrible things that occurred a long time ago and continue to be an ongoing issue in our society today. Everyone has either experienced, been apart of, or witnessed these awful acts at least once in their lifetime. Author Shirley Jackson coveys both violence and human cruelty in her well known short story "The Lottery". "Jackson's The Lottery" states, "The date of the lottery, its location, and the symbolic or ironic names of its characters all work to convey a meaning that is even more disturbing than the shock created by its well-known ending" (Yarmove 242). In Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery", she uses techniques such as symbolism and irony to reveal…
Amy Tan was born in Oakland, California, in 1952, and now lives with her husband, tax lawyer Louis DeMattei, in San Francisco. The Joy Luck Club was her first and perhaps most well known book. It brought her great success and made her name known around the world. The book was made into a movie by director Wayne Wang, which Tan produced and wrote the screenplay for. Tan 's other novels include The Kitchen God 's Wife, The Bonesetter 's Daughter and The Hundred Secret Senses. Much of the content of her books is autobiographical. Tan has said that Kitchen was written after Joy because her mother, Daisy, complained that people thought Suyuan from Joy was based on her. She urged Tan to write the true story of her life. Though much of the book is fictionalized, Kitchen does contain the details of Tan 's mother 's life: her twelve-year-long bad marriage (she told Amy she might even kill her first husband if she ever saw him again); her life during the war; the children she lost. In her stories, Tan blends Eastern and Western…
(Crenshaw, 1989). Intersectionality is important to understand and accept a person’s various social identities to promote a true sense of equality and completely fulfill the rights protected by the Constitution of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. The overlap of a person’s multiple social identities is common amongst many populations of people but is most commonly associated more with African Americans. Not enough are other groups of people considered when it comes to intersectionality thus making it difficult for these people to understand the term, the usage, nor its relevance. Intersectionality should be considered when creating United States social policy because it forces legislators to consider multiple groups of people and the various factors that affect these people, by doing this, it can better shape the system to create an equal opportunity for all of the United States…
Now the first and best example of inequality in this book would be the Tom Robinson Case. In this case Tom Robinson is accused of raping a white girl from a poor family. The problem with this is Tom is a black man and he is not treated fairly or given a fair trial just because he is black.…
To begin, I will explore the major tenents of Black feminism. I am beginning this paper by discussing the major tenents of Black feminism so that later in the paper when exploring the arguments of various Black feminist, connections can be made to the major tenents. The tenents are not being discussed in order of significance in Black feminism. With that, intersectionality is the first tenent of Black feminism I will discuss. Intersectionality centers Black feminism because Black feminists historically have been, and currently are, excluded from mainstream feminism and the anti-racism movement.…
At lest most of the town believes that I was right in sayin Tom raped Mayella, no white jury is gone let a black man get away with rapin’ a white girl. And even if they had voted innocent for that monster, I woulda just hung him meself, it was just easier getting the law to do it for me, that way I wouldn’t have to go to jail. Reads news paper article…
"She has committed no crime, she has merely broken a rigid and time-honored code of our society, a code so severe that whoever breaks it is hounded from our midst as unfit to live with. She is the victim of cruel poverty and ignorance, but I cannot pity her: she is white. She knew full well the enormity of her offense, but because her desires were stronger than the code she was breaking, she persisted in breaking it. […]…
In Shirley Jackson's short story "The Lottery" symbols are used to enhance and stress the theme of the story. A symbol is a person, object, action, place, or event that in addition to its literal meaning, suggests a more complex meaning or range of meanings. (Kirszner & Mendell 330) The theme of the story is how coldness and lack of compassion can be exhibited in people in situations regarding tradition and values. That people will do incredibly evil and cruel things just for the sake of keeping a routine. Three of the main symbols that Shirley uses in the story is the setting, black box, and the actual characters names. They all tie together to form an intriguing story that clearly shows the terrible potential if society forgets the basis of tradition. The story also shows many similarities between the culture of the village, and the culture of Nazi Germany. How blind obedience to superiors can cause considerable damage to not only a community, but the entire world. Symbolism plays a large role in "The Lottery" to set the theme of the story and make the reader question traditions.…
3. On January 24, 1988, the victim, a young cocktail waitress, was coming home from work when, as she got out of her car, a black man pointed a gun at her face and demanded her money and her purse. She handed them over and her assailant led her from the lighted area in front of her apartment building to a darkened area at the corner of the building. He threatened her with the gun and forced her to remove her hose and underpants and proceeded to rape her. Afterward, the victim suggested they each go their separate ways and the assailant agreed. The victim watched him walk away and then ran into her house and called first her mother and then the police. Troy Webb was arrested for the crime after the victim identified a photo of him as the attacker. At trial, the prosecution presented evidence that the victim had picked out a photograph of Webb at the police station. After declaring that she was ninety-nine…
I think the author intended to include intersectionality in the story to show that people have the tendency to categorize others immediately without even getting to know them. As humans we judge others way too much for our own good and we don’t even realize we are doing it majority of the time. I think Morrison's main purpose in Recitatif is to make the reader a lot more aware of their stereotypical judgements about different races based on the use of different signs that Twyla and Roberta display as characters throughout the story. By writing with this technique of using hidden signs in the text it makes the reader begin to try to naturally figure out the races of Twyla and Roberta. She also includes things in this story such as their views on intelligence, physical appearance, racial tensions, wealth and social class. I think Morrison hopes to make her readers aware that we are all guilty of using stereotypes that this society has created for us. It’s just what we have known all our lives. Maybe a learned behavior from our parents, grandparents, or anyone we are around a lot. Everyone, even if they are racist or the most non-racist human being on earth, makes judgments on a “different”…
I will try to explain intersectionality. First of all you need to know what intersectionality is. Intersectionality is a theoretical framework which explains violence or discrimination against humans. Now I will give you an example and then try to connect it to intersectionality. I will use an example of spider web to explain this theory. This example will give you some idea about intersectionality. Think about a spider web. A Point in the centre and all threads connected to each other. If we remove one thread from the spider web, it will fall apart. Now consider yourself. You have some identities and these identities are connected just like spider web and we cannot remove any identity from you. If we remove any identity from you, then you will not be the same person. Age, religion, color, race, gender, language and so many others are all identities of a person. Keep in mind that some of these identities don’t stay constant for example age. Age changes with the time and create some advantages and disadvantages. Everybody has a different set of identities and the set of these identities can be used against you. The combination of these identities can create problems, inequality and discrimination. We try to analyze, what kind combination of identities can create what kind of problems with the help of intersectionality. For example if you are a young black women then you might have faced discrimination in different way than an old black women. You will not be treated the same way as some other lady with different set of identities. Age, religion, color, race, gender, language, social class and national divisions create a spider web of inequality. From this spider web anything can be used against you for the basis of discrimination. One can be discriminated in different ways and in various contexts. Now I can say that “Intersectionality provide us a lens which is able to look at the ways of discrimination in various contexts and Intersectionality theory also…
Intersectionality is how we study relationships amongst one another and amongst different kinds of people. As a young, Jewish, Middle Eastern female, who grew up in a middle-class society, my ethnicity, gender, and class influence my day to day life in many ways, whether it was socially, educationally, or recreationally. I believe intersectionality could sometimes be difficult to face, as well as beneficial. These three fundamental components that make me who I am; race/ethnicity, gender, and class have had the greatest effect on…
