The first example of irony is one that you do not understand until closer to the end of the novel. This is when Baba and Amir flee to America. Baba and Amir left a very luxurious life to go to a foreign country for safety. When Baba and Amir arrive in San Francisco California it is almost a completely different world compared to their small town, Kabul. They move into a tiny two bedroom rundown apartment and drive an old, diminished car that has seen its better days. The major change for the duo is Baba’s job. Baba left a successful carpet importing company that he owned and operated. As well as being well know and well respected in his town. One must read and pay attention closely to find it. Amir writes a story about when a man cries his tears turn into pearls. This man got greedy and killed his wife so he could cry and produce more pearls. Hassan picked out a flaw in this story “ ‘ why did the man kill his wife? In fact, why did he ever have to feel sad to shed tears? Couldn’t he have just smelled an onion?’ “(p.36). This makes Amir furious, he thought; “…What does he know, that illiterate Hazara? He’ll never be anything but a cook. How dare he criticize you?”(p.37). This is ironic because Hassan which is illiterate and has no education picked a flaw out if Amir’s story
