My mom told me that when I was a kid, I was very interested in learning different kinds of language. When I was living in China, I loved to learn English. Whenever I watch foreign TV shows, I imitate the way how they talk. English used to be my favorite subject in school, until I immigrated to America. In America, I noticed that English was not as easy as I thought it would be. My biggest barrier is grammar. I found out that it is hard to write an essay in English without good grammar skills. Most of the time my teacher does not know what I was writing. That is because in China we do not have to worry about grammar. I was afraid when I heard I had to go to work. I am afraid to talk with strangers because of my bad English. I did not want my parents to be disappointed, so I decided work at the restaurant. On the first day of work, I felt useless. The restaurant was so busy and I could not help with anything, I felt ashamed of myself. Since, my English was not good at that point, I felt nervous when the customer called on me. So, I doubled my effort on learning English and learning how to improve my skills in working at the restaurant. Furthermore, my English had improved after the working experience. At first, I do not like to communicate with people because of my lack of English. My English has improved dramatically because we communicate in English everyday. I spoke differently when I was around my American friends and my Chinese friends. While I was talking to my Chinese friends, I will be mixing some Chinese language in my dialect. However, I speak more proper English when I am with my American friends. When in the Chinese group, my dialect just automatically changes to Chinese language because I feel more comfortable by talking that way.
