Loneliness is often viewed as a very negative emotion that has the ability to cause great pain and often times can change the way people think and act. Many of the characters in the book, Of mice and men by John Steinbeck, are affected by loneliness. Crooks, George and Curley's wife are all characters in Of mice and men by John steinbeck. Crooks is very protective of his privacy, but when he starts to warm up to lennie and candy in chapter 4, he becomes a completely different person because he is no longer lonely. Curley's wife openly admits her loneliness and how it affects her to lennie in chapter 5, pages 86 through 87. And George has to deal with his child like companion constantly.     "Of Mice and Men" essay on Loneliness is a basic part of human life. Every one becomes lonely once in a while but in Steinbeck's novella "Of Mice and Men", he illustrates the loneliness of ranch life in the early 1930's and shows how people are driven to try and find friendship in order to escape from loneliness. Steinbeck creates a lonely and blue atmosphere at many times in the book. He uses names and words such as the town near the ranch called "Soledad", which means loneliness and the card game "Solitaire" Which means by ones self. He makes it clear that all the men on the ranch are lonely, with particular people lonelier than others. In the opening chapter, Steinbeck introduces the idea of loneliness and men who work on ranches living temporary lives, with no aim in life. Steinbeck uses the setting to convey these ideas. As they were walking along the path, it is described as " a path beaten by hard boys coming down from the ranches to swim in the deep pool, and beaten hard by tramps who come wearily down from the highway in the evening to jungle-up near water" (p.18) This creates a setting and shows how men who work on the ranch have had temporary, isolated and lonely lives. He also writes "an ash-pile made by many fires" (p.18) This shows that many men must have walked through this road to enter a lonely and miserable life, moving from ranch to ranch finding useless work. I think all the people living in the ranch are lonely. This proves this where Steinbeck describes the bunk house where all the workers sleep. "Over each bunk there was nailed an apple box with the opening forward so that it made two shelves for personal belongings of the occupant of the bunk." (p38) The way Steinbeck describes the bunkhouse indicates their lonely lives. Also by only having two shelves for their personal belongings shows their lonely insecure lives.…

    Loneliness and companionship is imminent throughout the book. It starts from the beginning when George sets the tone by repeating to Lennie that life on a ranch is the loneliest life there is, for example Steinbeck states “Guys like us that work on ranches are the loneliest guys in the world’. This shows us that men on a ranch rarely have any companionship or safety however George and Lennie have each other and this contradicts the idea that ranch men are always lonely. As the story develops we see that there are other characters that experience loneliness one point in the story like Candy, Crooks and Curley’s wife all confess to it. Crooks and Curley’s wife find a companion within Lennie and share their fears for example with Crooks, Steinbeck states ‘don’t make no difference who the guy is, longs he's with you. I tell ya, I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an' he gets sick". This shows the effects that loneliness can have on a person and Crooks admits that he is extremely lonely and companionship of his kind is impossible. Also another lonely character is Curley’s wife, she is forbidden to talk to anyone but Curley however instead she approaches the ranch hands by looking for Curley as an excuse to talk to them. Only result of this is that she becomes more disliked and Curley gets more jealous. Unfortunately her loneliness leads to her untimely death by making the error of confiding in Lennie and teasing him. This all leads up to George’s decision to shoot Lennie as he knows that the hope of such companionship with Lennie dies as the cycle will be repeated and it seems that George’s original belief becomes true as he shall now walk through life alone.…
