Mental illnesses are topics that society takes too lightly. Throughout All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven, Theodore Finch and Violet Markey have their own separate issues that they are trying to cope with while trying to finish their project. In the book, death was a fragile topic for Violet and finch. Violet lost her identity when Eleanor died. Violet stopped writing, stopped her website, and stopped living altogether. Violet got out of school work due to “extenuating circumstances.” During the course of the project, Finch helps Violet start living again. He makes her start writing, get in a car, and live like herself. She makes new friends and does her essay without mentioning her circumstances. However, when Finch dies, she held herself together. Violet did not lose herself, but she is deeply affected by the loss of her loved ones. “I wonder if my face will ever look the same again, or if I’ll always see my reflection -- Finch, Eleanor, loss, heartbreak, guilt, death,” (339). When Violet was slowly healing from Eleanor, Finch dies and leaves her with a broken heart. Yet, she understands it all from Finch’s note in the church. Also, Finch kept mentioning a cardinal that died during his childhood throughout his journey with Violet.
