There are many qualities of becoming a good leader, selfishness is not one. "Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people"- Nelson Mandela. Odysseus' journey home was all about himself he ordered his crew members to find food and fight for him, as he would never fight for them. Some think that Odysseus was a great leader because of his mind, but if he was so smart, why would he let is crewmates suffer. Odysseus was not a strong leader and ultimately contributed to the destruction of his own men by, not warning them about what Charybdis and Scylla where going to do, and he should have warned and stopped his men from killing the sun god's cattle.
The first piece of evidence to prove that Odysseus was not a good leader would be in the section of the story where Odysseus and his crew cross by Charybdis and Scylla. In this section Odysseus basically knows that Scylla is going to devour 6 of his men and he did not even let his men know about her, also he didn’t even talk about what Charybdis was going to do. The men would be really scared if they knew this but at least they would be prepared. Odysseus should have at least warned them so that they could put up a fight, even though they would be devoured either way.This is one reason to prove that Odysseus was not a good leader. …show more content…
In this section Odysseus did not tell the men that they should not touch the sacred cattle. He should have monitored them and warned them about what would happen to them in the future if they kill it. It was not really the crews fault because they where hungry and they rarely get any food. This was another example of Odysseus' weak leadership
