Examples Of Paranoia In The Crucible
The Crucible written by Arthur Miller is set In Puritan New England town of Salem Massachusetts. The town gets very flustered after witchcraft is accused. The Reverend, Parris catches his daughter and a group of her friends dancing around in the forest. The daughter Betty falls into a coma. When rumors are spread about the town, the townspeople start accusing them of witchcraft. Paranoia is set into the town, so Reverend Hale is called upon who is an expert on witchcraft. Parris questions the ring leader Abigail who also happens to be his niece about what happened in the forest and she denies doing any wrong saying they were just dancing. This story of right and wrong has a huge plot and is based of the Salem witch trials. People in the town rightfully get scared and actions to follow show people’s real personalities. Ethnics are defined as a system of moral values or the principle of right and wrong conduct. Many of the characters show ethical decisions. In act 1 scene 3 John Proctor is talking to Abigail and tells her that she and her friends need to stop their foolish acts. The year before Abigail worked for Proctor and his wife but was fired when the wife found out about an affair Abigail was having with him.Abigail still desire John. It just goes to show apart of Abigail's ethics not only did she engage in an affair with a married man, but she also practiced witchcraft and ran through the woods naked.
Reputation is everything in the Crucible. It is extremely important in a town where one’s social standing is tied to their ability to follow religious rules. If you do not have a good standing on your religious acts then you have no reputation. A good name is the only way to get someone to do business with you. A fair hearing relies on you social standing and reputation. Otherwise you are automatically deemed a liar and
