Power is gained and maintained in many ways in Animal Farm. However, the most eminent tactics used are knowledge and deception. We are able to see that these characteristics affect the overall evolution on “Manor Farm” and the animals thereof.
Sir Francis Bacon once said “Knowledge is power.” In Animal Farm, pigs realize the truth of this statement and exploit the opportunity their knowledge gives them to gain power. The pigs bestow the power over the farm upon themselves by convincing the other animals of their superior intelligence. The pigs do this in several ways. The first occurred with the death of Old Major when rebellion approaches. The other animals allowed the pigs to teach them and plan for the rebellion. “...The work of teaching fell onto the pigs…” (Orwell 15). As the pigs teach the ways of “animalism” they discerningly begin to exhibit their power over the others by assuming the positions of teachers. The theme of evolution is prominent throughout the book. Take for example the evolution of the farm, the windmill, and the farm beginning trade. Evolution is also demonstrated through the pigs, and the society within the farm. Directly after the revolution, the society within the farm excelled. “The animals were happy as they had never conceived it possible to be.” (Orwell 28). Every animal had a common goal; to succeed as an animal led farm. However, when the pigs got a taste for power and the life of a human, they wanted more.
