and have him for herself. Abigail states, “She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is cold, sniveling woman and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a…”(Miller, 1225). This shows the assumption with no facts to Elizabeth and John. Proof also helps gain supporters upon a subject to either help or go against a person.
The story shows this when Betty and Abigail say who they see with the devil in act I. This leads to followers believing the two just with assumption. This causes a big controversy in the town and people follow and believe the girls right from the start. This causes numerous amount of people in the story to go on trial for witchcraft. John Proctor goes to trial and tries to prove the women innocent but his plan backfires with the knowing relationship of him and Abigail in the past. John states, “In her life she has never lied. There are them who cannot sing , and them that cannot weep-my wife cannot lie. I have paid much to earn it sir” (Miller, 1259). This shows that John wants to grant supporters for his mistakes. The words he uses makes the incident seem likely to be true. He is confident in his wife and is trying to grant more to be on his side rather than a unreasonable end to the
trial. Assuming rather than having proof led to the killing of innocent people in the story. Many people who died were found guilty but no one really had any real evidence of the events happening. The Salem Witch Trials had no positive outcome and people just wanted to be a part of something. Many innocent people including Giles and the women of Salem. The main focus on John led to a tragic end. Even though he stands tall in the trial against himself with truth, the women, people and judge find him guilty. The truth might be the only thing keeping John out of danger but he needs proof more than truth in this case. The court finds him guilty and John sacrifices his life in the name of truth. Proof plays a critical factor in trying to determine a person’s misdeeds. The trials of Salem could've all been prevented with the facts and evidence of the women in the woods. The secret meeting in the woods led to the killing of innocent people. Proof is needed in the story and no one has enough information. The people just go off of each other for facts and the end result is far from positive. Proof plays an important role to get a positive outcome.
