Since “ The color purple” is about black people, racism is often seen. It has come to the point where Celie thinks she is ugly just because of the color of her skin. Also, the mayor’s wife goes to Sofia to ask her if she would like to become her maid and sofia responds by saying “ Hell no”. The mayor slapped sofia because of how she responded to his wife’s question, she immediately slapped him and this is what caused all the chaos in the first place. This obviously called the attention of many of the white people in the area.
Sexism is also seen a couple of times in the novel. Sexism was something really common in that era. Men would typically beat up women for no reason whatsoever. If there ever was a reason to do so, it still shouldn’t be that way. Men should not be allowed to hit women, which just isn’t right. Men should be able to treat a woman with respect and if they can’t do that, they just aren’t men. One can see that in the novel, Harpo beats sofia and that makes him less of a man. Racism and Sexism remain as problems that still need to be solved. Racism was worst back then, but it still exists and threatens today’s society as a whole. The same goes for sexism. Sexism is still very much present in today’s society where men think that they dominate women and that’s not true. Men and women have equal dominance in today’s society. The problem comes when men think there on top of the world, especially on top of women. People need to realize that this must be taken seriously because it could bring many long term effects or consequences that many people will not be happy
