Tom Robinson is greatly impacted by racism and is not treated fairly just because of the color of his skin. On page 241 of the book Mayella Ewell states “I said come here nigger and bust up this chifforobe for me, I gotta nickel for you.” Tom Robinson goes to help a young white woman but is then accused of a crime. An example of this can be seen on page 132, “Mrs Dubose lived alone except for a negro girl in constant attendance.” Mrs. Dubose is a white woman who has a black girl that is with her all the time. The black girl is not treated as a person and the white people are “higher up” than the black people. A second example of this can be found on page 169 “Put my bag in the front bedroom Calpurina, was the first thing that Aunt Alexndra said.” Calpurina works for the finches but is treated kindly and fairly even though she is a woman of color.
