Racism can be defined as prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior. In my own life, one example of racism was when I was walking down the street and saw a white woman tighten her grip on her purse as she walked past an African-American man. Harper Lee writes about a town called, Maycomb in Alabama the main character, Scout realizes all the racism that the town encounters through a trial of an African-American man named, Tom Robinson, who was accused of raping a young woman. To Kill a Mockingbird suggests that racism is learned, and therefore can be unlearned.
