Racism Today
For many years race has been a topic among many people. It does not directly affect me because I am white, but it does affect those who are not white, mainly African Americans. People are usually racist because of the person’s skin color, religion, or beliefs. When people are racist towards a person or group of people it is not like it is their fault, they did not choose to look or be like that, God did. Race is a common reason many people in the United States are treated poorly.
The main thing that has been an issue amongst us American’s for years is equality. Many people feel like blacks should have the same rights as us, while others believe they should have little to none at all. I think blacks should be treated the same way whites are treated. not matter because we are all the same in God’s eyes and deserve to be treated fairly with respect. Equality means we can all do the same thing, the same exact way and not be judged.
An issue that many people might find confrontational is, my parents will never let me date a black man.
I think they do not want me dating a black man because they are stereotyped as the troublemakers. I personally do not find black men attractive either. Another reason they think I should not date a black man is because if I had a kid with him the baby might be confused what color it actually is. That would be frowned upon in society.
A big part of history was slavery. Slavery was a very unfair period for blacks. During this time they were treated like dirt, because of their skin color. The African Americans had no rights and had to do anything their white owner told them to do. Blacks were not allowed doing anything the same as a white or with a white. Slavery is absolutely ridiculous and never should have never been allowed.
People in my community and communities around the world today are racist, just like in “To Kill A Mockingbird”, blacks are considered suspicious possibly causing trouble or harm. Many of those people are racist because of skin color. They think they are suspicious and trouble making because a lot of them get in trouble with the law, and this has given them a
“name”.
Some people I am close to, such as classmates can be racist. I think they are that way because they only like the appeal of skin color. Their family might be racist and taught them to also be racist. They might just be messing around because a friend is. Either way they are still racist and that is not okay. Sometimes being racist can be a norm among a group of people, this is not something to joke around about. I like the saying “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” I think this should be a community slogan.
