Examples Of Selfishness In Macbeth
In William Shakespeare play of Macbeth, the character of Macbeth depicts a variety of

human traits that are found in all people, traits that we all at one time or another have

experienced or will experience in the future. The qualities that Macbeth exhibited eventually led

to his downfall. Macbeth shows the human trait of arrogance and selfishness in order for him to

conquer the throne. These traits played out throughout the entire play and all the actions that he

exhibited had to do with him taking these traits and building his life around them.

In the beginning of the play Macbeth comes upon three witches that predict he will be

king, (Shakespeare, line 55 – 59, “you greet with present grace and great prediction of noble

His wife lady Macbeth put a bug in his ear that to speed up

the process he should kill the king. Macbeth’s arrogance is shown when he feels over confident

that no one can hurt him. At some point he feels invincible, ( Shakespeare, Act I Scene 3, lines

96- 97 “ Nothing afeard of what thyself didst make, Strange images of death”.) Nothing or no

one can harm him or get in his way. Macbeth arrogance leads him to believe that no one born of

a woman can do him harm, that if he dies it would be by an unforeseen event like by natural

causes, (Act IV Scene 1, lines 97 – 100). He commits crimes because he feels that no one can

touch him. At some point he even says that he is so powerful that he won’t even let the ghosts in

his head haunt him.

Another quality that Macbeth shows throughout the play is selfishness. He proves it by

ignoring his consciences and doing bad things. Lady Macbeth also greedy for her husband to

take the throne begins to doubt her husband when he starts to think twice about killing the king

and trying to gain the throne in a honorable way because he believes that every bad deed has its

price, (Shakespeare scene 7, Line 1 -10). Lady Macbeth on the other hand uses her

She challenges the natural order of things. "Come you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood; stop up the passage to remorse." Is a quote made by Lady Macbeth describing her wanting to get rid of her kind feelings of femininity and fill her up with cruelty that of a man so that she can commit the murder herself. Macbeth once implies that his wife Lady Macbeth is a masculine soul inhabiting a female body. Femininity it self is seen to a degree as a source of evil and violence, but they rely more on deception and manipulation. Because of this stereotypical portrayal of women it is argued that Macbeth is a misogynistic play. Furthermore Shakespeare plays on the idea of the natural state of woman and men and of that of nature. These symbols help to reinforce the theme of nature and…

Phony prophecies, overly ambitious wife, weak mind, insecurities and overall half of the ambition on his part was unwanted lead to all the atrocious acts done in the play. His wife was quite the manipulator and got him to do just about anything, many would say it is her fault for his downfall, although it may not be entirely her fault or the witches because somewhere deep inside of him he already had the burning sensation to be powerful, she played a big role in his…

At this point, Macbeth has not yet been influenced by the witches and the ambition they provoked. As soon as he meets the witches his demise begins. Being truly interested in the witches' predictions, Macbeth quickly rises in power and begins to neglect his conscience. The witches seem to have total control over his mind and his behavior. They trigger Macbeth's destructive actions, which ultimately become his habit to kill. To begin, Lady Macbeth is a deeply ambitious woman who lusts for power. She is the one who initially spurs her husband into killing Duncan. As soon as she learns about the witches prophecies and spies the opportunity for her husband to become king, she instantly thinks of a plan to accelerate the process. Her longing for power and convincing manner encourages him as to act without any reflection, and to murder. There’s a quote that defines very well how Lady Macbeth was affected by ambition: Niccolo Machiavelli states “He who blinded by ambition, raises himself to a position whence he cannot mount higher, must thereafter fall with the greatest loss”. Lady Macbeth, who was blinded by the envy of gaining wealth, in the end committed suicide because of the conscience she had developed. She had realized how tough it is to wash or soak out nasty bloodstains. Even though her husband didn’t get to the point of hurting himself as he died in a battle against others, he too deeply regretted his actions. One of the main reasons why he felt powerful enough to do such a thing has a lot to do with the knowledge he thought he had thanks to the witches.…

Macbeth is the last of the four tragedies written by Shakespeare. Shakespeare depicts how Macbeth, who was once a powerful hero, sinks into a tyrant bringing calamity to the country and people. That reflected his individual ambition and lust for power, which destroyed human nature and showed us the essence of anti-humanity caused by the extreme individualism. There exists inner certainty in Macbeth’s tragedy, which is the ambitious desire, the sense of guilty for vicious circle and unfounded persistence and confidence. Macbeth’s tragedy was not only the tragedy of disposition, but also that of the society.…
