Frankenstein as a gothic novel
Frankenstein can be described as a gothic novel because of some of the characteristics of how it was written. There are many different characteristics of a gothic novel that make this a gothic novel. Some of these characteristics include having a gloomy setting which was shown throughout the whole novel. The supernatural element of the monster is another example of a gothic novel. The last example of a gothic novel displayed in this novel is the intense emotion displayed by the characters through the novel. He was very sure of himself when he was creating the monster and how he wanted it to be done. When the monster is finally created and not what Frankenstein was hoping he would turn out like he does a full 180 and becomes very detached from the monster. He than rejects his creation that not long ago he wanted to create with his full confidence. When Frankenstein rejected the creature that he worked so hard to create the creature responded in an equally intense way. The creature went searching for his creator who he thought of as a father, while searching he killed innocent people because his emotions toward his creator were elevated because he felt abandoned. These emotions that are very intense is more evidence that this could be a gothic novel.
The gothic elements in Frankenstein include the dark setting, supernatural elements, and intense emotion being demonstrated. Throughout the novel it takes the reader through a roller coaster of emotions, making them realize that at some point in our lives, we feel as just as alone as the creacher does, that we fight to belong, and try to feel wanted in the
