Exchange Student College Essay
It was August 2011, when I was watching television together with my family. We sat together in the living room like we usually do. There was nothing special in the news so I didn’t really pay attention about what was going on, I kept reading my book and talked to my mom. A little while after that I heard the newscaster say about the war what was happening in the Middle East between the countries there (Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, etc.) and United States of America. I already knew that they had war with each other since 2001; I also knew that the reason for that war is about terrorism. I didn’t really know about the terrorism things at that time. But when I was watching the television I saw hundreds of people killed by US troops with their bombs. At that time, I just had the picture that it is just one of America’s propaganda to attack the weak country with their strong military. I still remember when I said, “If I could choose what country in the world I travel to, I will not come to the United Stated of America, daddy!” My daddy just laughed and said, “You’ll never know young lady, so let’s see”.
Two years after that I am writing an essay in my room, not in Indonesia but United States. How can it be? Well, I am an exchange student staying in Wisconsin now. I applied for an exchange program for all over the world and United States is one of the countries in my list. Not because I want to go to the United States because I already knew that there is nothing good that I can get in there but scholarship. I never thought that God picked this country for me because I made more than 10 countries in my list, and He knows how much I had a lot of negative minds about this country. USA just a place for Hollywood people that spend a ton of money everyday for their fashion or the place that people are obsessed to attack a weak country with their strength. Now I know the reason why He sent me to here, to see directly how the people are, the condition, learn about their

The move Amistad and the story “Interesting Narrative of the life of Olaudah Equiano” have many similarities. The three similarities between the story and Amistad are the ways that the slaves were treated, the conditions of the ships, and the reactions of the slaves. In both the movie and the book slaves had to overcome horrific conditions to be freed, In the movie the main character Cinque was captured sold and thrown onto the Amistad and into the life of slavery but yet he was fought for and he finally made it home, In the story Olaudah finally was also on a slave ship and was sold into slavery.…

Everyone carries the stories of their lives wrapped around their shoulders. Some people carry feather-light stories; other people’s stories, heavy as bricks threaten to break their spirit as they carry its burden. In my opinion, the best stories – fiction or not − begin with the famous and treasured words of “Once upon a time.” So allow me to share with you my tale of a hellion land, filled to the brim with vagabonds in every corner, and survival of the fittest.…

As a student of the UIC's Honor College I believe that I will bring new innovative ideas to my fellow students and to those around me. I not only will aspire to better myself, but to encourage those around me to be the best student they can be. As the youngest sibling I have endured through many challenges. From struggling to explain my opinion about a subject in a way that will back up my reasoning to asserting my role as a leader. Although at times I have felt like giving up, I have prevailed. I learned how to state my opinion in a way that is informative, yet not rude. One challenge that I felt I excelled in exceptionally is being a leader. I have immersed myself in multiple school activates that leadership is a necessity. I am currently the president of the twelfth grade book club and a board member of the Senior Committee. With the skills that I have learned as a result of those positions I will be able to implement them in the classroom and in school events. As a student of UIC’s Honor College I plan to make use of all the advantages given to me. With the benefits provided to me I plan to take advantage of the honor courses that apply to Physical Therapy. I would also like to study abroad if I were given the opportunity to because I believe that you can learn a lot by immersing yourself in different cultures. It would be an honor for me to take part in the Honor College as a tutor because as a student who has had the experience of being both a tutor and a student I know that it can be a rewarding experience.…

My most prized possession is my mental stability and ethical background that I have acquired from my southern upbringing. Growing up in a rural community in the south and being reared by elderly parents allowed my seeds of character and respect to be nurtured by an entire village of people who saw my potential and wanted to see me succeed and thus pushed and prayed for my wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. As a child, series of unique experiences of being able to develop intimate and loving relationships with almost everyone in my community made me appreciate the influence of everyone on my life. It was not long before I realized that no matter how old or young, rich or poor, or educated a person was, everyone contributed to humanity’s niche…

There are one hundred and ninety six different countries in the world. There are thousands of ethnic groups among these countries. Within all of the diverse places we are all similar because we are all human. We have the same wants and same needs; the only thing that makes us different is the location we originated. Here in the United States, Americans, whether realizing it or not, consider themselves higher in status. Even though they are diverse within themselves, the whole is considered the superior people by not only themselves but by surrounding countries as well. They have first-rate justice systems, improved living situations, high-class transportation, finer luxuries, and enhanced overall lifestyles. My college English class was informed that we must interview an international student to discuss their opinions about the U.S., and it was an exciting topic to conceive.…

Being the oblivious seven year old I was, I thought that the rest of the world lived just as good or better than we do here in America. While that may be true for many parts of the world, it isn’t for some, like Yemen. As we were packing our bags, my parents were telling me their memories of Yemen, all of which were good and only made me even more anxious to get to Yemen. We got to the airport and we were on our way to what I thought was a land of happiness, and then it hit me……

As I near the end of my high school career, I realize that I am not the same person who began 3 years ago as a freshman. While my teachers instilled the fundamental aspects of a well-rounded education, I learned through my own experience that education extends beyond the classroom. My activities in academics, athletics, community service and work experience, have instilled qualities in me that will prepare me for the immediate future of college and beyond.…

! Growing up in a war torn country, I always dreamed of living in the United States. Every person in our small town talked about how exciting and full of opportunity America was. Play dates, cartoons, and trips to Disney land made the top of every little kid’s birthday wish. Unlike most children, my birthday party did not consist of bouncy houses, stacks of presents, and a princess cake. Burning buildings, solders, and panicked refugees were the highlight of my birthday party. Giving up the only world I have ever known and fleeing to America was one of the most drastic changes in my life, especially at such a young age.…

Many if not all people change at one point or another during the course of their life. Majority of this change occurs during the high school years and even more specifically, freshman year. Many people associate the term “freshman” with being naive and asinine. However, in actuality during this period we as young adults are just attempting to find ourselves. “So much is still to be learned! So long a road lies before us, and what care we must take if we must travel it alone”(Rand 54). The development of a teen going through their high school years can be broken up into 3 stages; the beginning, the middle, and the end of the freshmen year.…

Being involved in my community wasn't a priority in my schedule, I really had overlooked the importance of really being involved in my community and the beneficial aspects that it will have on me rather then I would have on my community. Community service lately has become a big consumption of my weekends, which have had multiple positive effects on me and only has it brought hope and happiness to people, but it also lead to spiritual and personal growth. It is an experience that cannot be bought with any amount of money. A volunteer benefits himself or herself because they get to see how their contribution has made a difference. This experience contributes to personal development especially in areas such as self-fulfillment, self-confidence, and self-esteem that often flourish in the midst of volunteering experiences. The contributions that I have made to my community, volunteering countless hours at the local two general hours during weekends and summers has really impacted me as a person. I now am more involved with my community then ever through a club that I have joined at school (California scholarship foundation) and have started the year off by volunteering with AID’s walk Los Angeles and many more to come over the year. I now don’t see volunteering as a sacrifice of my time rather an opportunity to become a better person through community outreach.…
