I am a pretty serious runner and I am pregnant so I can talk on this topic with some experience.
First at all, being pregnant doesn’t mean you are sick! If you were exercising before, keep it up and if you were not, it is a good reason to start…as usual, all in moderation! As per the article…., here are some of the advantages of exercising while pregnant:
- keeping active is an energy and mood booster. It keeps you sane during pregnancy
- it helps you controlling your weight. The average recommended weight gain is 25 to 35 lbs for a healthy pregnancy. The more you put on, the more you will have to lose.
- it helps you during labor and recovery after labor. I run marathons and gave birth. I
don’t know what is the hardest! One thing I know is if you are stay in good shape during your pregnancy, labor SHOULD be easier.
- it helps you getting back in shape quicker after the birth
However, there is exercise and exercise. Exercise during pregnancy should be gentle and risk free. Walking, swimming and biking are my winners but yoga and light weight lifting are also good for you.
Last two t things before ending this posting:
- if you try to get pregnant, don’t listen to people telling you that exercise is not recommended : THIS IS NOT TRUE ! First, these people usually don’t exercise and second, they don’t know what they are talking about : providing you are ovulating, you can get pregnant.
- don’t rush to get back into intense exercise after birth. Listen to what your body is telling you. Except, if you are a World Champion, there will always be races waiting for you. If you are concerned by losing the baby weight, breastfeeding is a better approach
Conclusion : there is no reason not to exercise even during pregnancy. However, listen to your body and slow down!
