Exotic Animal Trade
The exotic animal trade is an issue that concerns me greatly; the trade is dangerous to the citizens that own them, as well as being a generally atrocious situation for the animals. Exotic animals are constantly being brought over to the United States illegally, with the occasional legal transactions. They can be bought from roadside menageries, from the people that capture them in the wild, from auctions, over the internet, or from backyard breeders. It’s legal in a few states to own them, but they aren’t seriously considering the hazards the animals can bring. Many of them carry diseases, they are volatile, and they are wild animals. Wild animals are not safe, and their owners can’t provide the correct care for non domesticated animals. Taking into consideration these risks, does this really seem like a safe situation to condone?
When people buy exotic animals they don’t realize how much care these animals need; transferring from the wild, to an enclosed structure is a big change, and not a good one. They need special care, appropriate housing, a specific diet, and so on. With all this work average people are not able to provide for the animals. This leads to poor conditions for them, a lot of times they are trapped in small metal cages with no shelter. Situations like this can lead to abnormal animal behavior such as self mutilation. The animals at that point have essentially been driven mad. Cruel and inappropriate treatment is common among exotic pet owners; they are beaten into submission, they will have the animal’s claws and teeth removed and are left alone for extended periods of time almost in solitary confinement. These animals are wild, they cannot handle being in that kind of environment, it is unhealthy, and it is bad for their mental state. When the owners decide that they can’t sufficiently care for them, they give them away to zoos, there isn’t enough room for all of the unwanted animals though, meaning that a lot of times they end up being

Millions of Americans have owned or currently care for a pet of some sort. These animals also include those of an exotic origin. The ownership of such animals is generally deemed as unusual or bizarre. Some would argue that exotic animals are not fit to be in the possession of a common person due to the belief that they are unmanageable and pose harm to the owner. Although, this is merely a stereotype produced by those who are in opposition to keeping uncommon pets. The ability to own exotic animals as pets should be maintained and recognized as acceptable.…

A rapidly growing trade for the Transnational Organized Crime groups is the illegal wildlife trade. “By its very nature, it is almost impossible to obtain reliable figures for the value of illegal wildlife trade. Experts at TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network, estimate that it runs into hundreds of millions of dollars.” (2015). Tigers, Elephants, Rhinos, and even sea creatures like turtles are just a few animals that are being poached for this trade. The elephants for their ivory and Rhinos for their horns, is all that a poacher is after and metric tons of the stuff is being seized. The question to that is, how much is getting through that nobody knows about? Plants, yes plants, and other animals are all being sold for such…

In the, “Exotic Animals Belong in the Wild,” essay, the author made a good, persuasive case. They used a lot of evidence to back up their case, and they also included a lot of details. It is quite clear that the author does not think people should be able to own exotic pets. First of all, the author included a lot of evidence to back up their case. For example, the author said, “Most animal rights groups, such as the Humane Society of the United States and Born Free USA, agree that wild animals are not meant to be kept as pets.”…

In Vice News there is an article called "It's Basically Legal for Mexican Narcos to Buy Lions, Cheetahs, and Other Exotic Pets," by Duncan Tucker where he discusses exotic animal ownership in Mexico. He starts off by stating the markets like the Sonora Market, and how exotic pets are kept and sold there. The exotic animals are kept in small cages and are hidden from view. A cofounder of an animal rights group Dr. Esquivel, mentioned "illegal animal trafficking is one of the country's most lucrative illicit business." It is not hard to keep an exotic animal as a pet under Mexican law, even for species in danger of extinction. Tucker then focuses on drug traffickers and their interest on exotic animals such as large cats. He gives examples of young drug traffickers who like to show off their wealth on social media by owning exotic pets. Tucker highlights animal rights activist views on how people in Mexico do not think beyond if owning an exotic animal is legal or not; some people do not think of ethics, especially narcos.…

How would you feel if you were a special animal that was bought or raised to be hunted and killed where you’re not supposed to be? Exotic animals are often bought from zoos and/or raised to be hunted or killed in the Texas ranches. Not only is that cruel but the animals are also caged in during the hunt, as well as the hunting lasting year around due to there being no “closed season”.…

There have been several investigations into their inhumane practices. Tragically, Sea World is responsible for thirty-six unnatural orca deaths since 1971 (“Lives Stolen”). Some of the causes include diseases, stillbirth complications, and infections (“Lives Stolen”). None of these orcas died from old age. All these deaths occurred due to conditions of their captivity. Wild orcas have an average lifespan of thirty to fifty years, but in captivity the oldest orca was only twenty-six years old (“Lives Stolen”). These horrors only accounts for one species out of 6,126 species housed in all zoos (“Zoo Statistics”). Zoos are not only unsafe for animals, but also for humans. Over the past twenty-six years, 256 injuries have occurred from animal attacks (Romain). Of those injuries, thirty-three deaths have been reported (Romain). The injuries and deaths are of both the animal trainers and audience. Zoos practice an unmoral act to reduce attacks, they force antipsychotic medication down the throats of those animals to keep them more docile. Medication is not ethical, instead, animals should remain in their natural habitats, not pinned up in close proximity to people. Since animals are not in their natural homes, they perform unnatural habits such as self-abuse, pacing, swaying, boredom, and stress-induced behavior. Unlike in the zoo, animals out in…

The suffering they go through is incredibly painful. They’re fed meals that they shouldn’t be consuming. Living in small tanks that are empty. And dying at an earlier age, because of being in captivity. These problems could be easily stopped if those around the animals would open their eyes and look what they are doing to these poor creatures.…

It is true that not all cases of an exotic pet have a negative outcome and the responsible ownership of these animals can happen. Although, this is not always the case: there are dangers involved in owning an exotic animal. Kukol, Zuzana reports in USA Today, "Dangers from exotic animals are low. On average in the United States, only 3.25 people per year are killed by captive animals." It also claims that most of the animals are not "stolen" from the wild, but born in captivity. Although 3.25 deaths may not be a lot, especially when compared to something like the number of deaths daily from a motor vehicle, it is still too many because these deaths are preventable by leaving animals in their natural habitats. The article "Animals Born in Captivity" says, "Wild animals usually prefer to stay away from people; captive raised animals on the other hand are often too familiar and social with humans. For a wild animal, losing its caution of humans is a bad thing, dangerous for the animal and possibly us." When wild animals encounter humans, many foreign germs and infections spread to both the animals and the humans. Similarly, feeding wild animals may attract more animals into a town or near people, which can easily spread diseases and expose both the animals and the humans to foreign, and potentially deadly, germs and…

Walking into a pet store is as exhilarating as waking up on Christmas morning; each adorable animal is another potential household pet, and the store itself is crowded with colourful collars, fuzzy squeaky toys, and clothes to put your fluffy victims in. But, as you view each animal, have you ever stopped and thought about where they have come from? Well, believe it or not, these loveable creatures come from mass-breeding facilities, where they are kept in unacceptable conditions until they are sold to pet stores around the country. Many people enjoy the company of a pet, whether it be a cat or a dog; these animals provide a person with companionship and affection. Pet owners become emotionally invested in their pets and treat them as if they are part of the family. Some pet owners will pamper and shower these animals with affection as well as let them have the run of the house. However, a person needs to remember animals do not function as humans or have the capacity to reason. There are people who believe wild or exotic animals can be domesticated as well as become family pets. When taking care of pets such as a lion or primate these animals require more attention and owner responsibility. There are many states within the United States that have laws banning the ownership of wild animals. However, people are still purchasing exotic animals as pets through the black market. Local communities should not allow residents to own wild animals as companions or breed exotic animals for profit because of the domestic environment, health hazards, as well as the additional financial and social responsibilities associated with owning such pets.…

The problem with exotic pet ownership has been escalating over the years, especially in the last ten to fifteen years alone. Many state governments in the last couple years have been trying to pass laws and different measures to deal with this issues such as an Ohio lawmaker that is proposing a new law that would ban people from owning most exotic animals starting in 2014 (Weekly Reader News Addition) and in Tennessee where lawmakers pitch new exotic ownership rules which would ban the private ownership, import, sale and transfer of most wildlife--regardless of whether or not they are indigenous to the state (DVM Magazine). A few big problems with owning exotic pets is they are often really dangerous and many people cannot provide…

Animal cruelty can be anywhere and done by anyone. Many people think of animals, especially cats and dogs, as disposable. They get a puppy for the children for Christmas only to realize it is a lot of work that the children are not ready for. They forget to feed and water it, don 't take it for walks, and don 't take it outside to use the bathroom. The solution, abandon it or just take it to the humane society. They 'll get another when the kids are older. An animal that is used to being taken care of by humans cannot fend for itself when it is dumped. It slowly starves or gets attacked by other animals. Many people will shoot stray animals with bbs to chase them away from their property. The animal becomes hurt or aggressive…
