ABSTRACT
The experiment was executed in order to purify compounds through recrystallization. Recrystallization is the primary used operation for purifying solid organic compounds that differ in solubility at different temperature. It is a process of dissolving the solid to be crystallized in a hot solvent mixture and then cooling the solution slowly. The objective of the experiment is to purify crude acetanilide product. At the beginning of the experiment, materials and solutions needed were gathered. Some of the members were asked to prepare the water bath, ice bath and a fluted filter paper while others were tasked to weigh the filter papers in advance so that the experiment will flow smoothly. The formation of crude acetanilide was due to the acetylation of aniline and acetic anhydride. The recrystallizing solvent dissolved the acetic acetanilide and was heated in a water bath. Crystals started to form after cooling the solutions in an ice bath. Pure acetanilide was the product after the second crystrallization which was obtained by finally removing the impurities through filtration. The computations performed in this experiment are determining the limiting reagent, theoretical yield and percent yield.
INTRODUCTION
Impurities are common in compounds most especially organic ones that came from natural origin. There can be combinations of soluble, insoluble and colored impurities. Recrystallization is the most important method for purifying and eliminating impurities in solid organic compounds. It involves solids that don’t have the same property as the liquids used in sublimation. This method purifies organic solid compounds based on its solubility in different temperatures.
