EXPERIMENT 8
BOILING POINT

n-Butyl Alcohol n-Butyl Alcohol, a four carbon straight chain alcohol, is a volatile, clear liquid with a strong alcoholic odor; miscible with water. It is flammable strongly with a luminous flame.
Formula: C4H9OH
Boiling point: 118 ºC
Melting point: -89 ºC

Tert-Butyl Alcohol
Tert-Butyl Alcohol or “2-methyl-2-propanol” is the simplest tertiary alcohol. It is one of the four isomers of butanol. Tert-Butanol is a clear liquid (or a colorless solid, depending on the ambient temperature) with a camphor-like odor. It is very soluble in water and miscible with ethanol and diethyl ether. It is unique among the isomers of butanol because it tends to be a solid at room temperature.
Formula: C4H10O
Boiling point: 82 ºC
Melting point: 25-26 ºC

n-Amyl Alcohol n-Amyl Alcohol or “1-Pentanol” is an alcohol with five carbon atoms. It is a colorless liquid with an unpleasant aroma.
Formula: C5H11OH
Boiling point: 136-138 °C
Melting point: -78 °C

EXPERIMENT 9
MELTING POINT

STEARIC ACID is the saturated fatty acid with an 18-carbon chain and has the IUPAC name octadecanoic acid. It is a white waxy solid.
Formula: C18H36O2
Boiling point: 376.1 °C
Melting point: 69.6 °C

BENZOIC ACID is a colorless crystalline solid and a simple aromatic carboxylic acid. The name is derived from gum benzoin, which was for a long time the only source for benzoic acid.
Formula: C7H6O2
Boiling point: 249.2 °C
Melting point: 120-122 °C

SALICYLIC ACID is a monohydroxybenzoic acid, a type of phenolic acid and a beta hydroxy acid. This colorless crystalline organic acid is widely used in organic synthesis and functions as a plant hormone. Best known for its use in anti-acne treatments.
Formula: C7H6O3
Boiling point: 211 °C
Melting point: 158-160 °C

EXPERIMENT 10

Salicylic acid(C7H6O3) is the other reactant that makes up ASA. It is an organic compound that is apart of the carboxyl group. This group contains acids called carboxylic acids which are general weak. Carboxylic acids are aldehydes that have been oxidized, aldehydes are oxidized alcohols. The double bonded O attached to the OH (or COOH) as a substituent in an organic molecule indicates a carboxylic acid. And as stated earlier, salicylic acid is derived from metabolized salicin.…

The Hydroxyl group on alcohols relates to their reactivity. This concept was explored by answering the question “Does each alcohol undergo halogenation and controlled oxidation?” . Using three isomers of butanol; the primary 1-butanol, the secondary 2-butanol and the tertiary 2-methyl-2-propanol, also referred to as T-butanol, two experiments were performed to test the capabilities of the alcohols. When mixed with hydrochloric acid in a glass test tube, the primary alcohol and secondary alcohols were expected to halogenate, however the secondary and tertiary ended up doing so. This may have been because of the orientation of the Hydroxyl group when butanol is in a different shape than 1-butanol. As hypothesised, when 1-butanol and 2-butanol samples were mixed with potassium permanganate in a test tube, signs of oxidation reactions resulted.…

The boiling point reflects the strength of forces between molecules. The more tightly bonded the molecules are, the more energy is required to convert them into gases. These forces are called intermolecular forces. There are 3 types, dispersion forces, dipole-dipole and hydrogen bonding. The influence of these attractive forces will depend on the functional groups present. For example heptane has boiling point of 98.4 degrees (1) and 1-hexanol has boiling point of 157 degrees. (2)…

The main goal of this lab was to create a Grignard reagent and then use that same reagent to produce a tertiary alcohol. This was accomplished by reacting the Grignard reagent with acetophenone. The end product was 1,1-diphenylethanol. Its recorded melting point range was 80°C-81°C, which is the same as its literature value. This means that there was no or very little impurity in the recrystallization process…
