The USA made the right choice to annex the Philippines.
What year did the American-Spanish war start? The late 1890s. The American-Spanish war was a war between the Americans and the Spanish where they fought for 3 weeks in the Philippines. Then after the Americans fought off the Spanish for the Philippines they decided to annex, which was 1 out of 3 things they could have done. In my opinion, the USA made the right choice to annex it based on two things: the manifest destiny, and the raw resources it brought.
The U.S. made the right decision by annexing the Philippines because of manifest destiny. Manifest destiny is a “belief that the expansion of the US throughout the American continent was both justified and inevitable.” They do this because of imperialism and they avoid any backlash from other countries by saying they needed help or they were going to not survive so we just invaded them and gave them resources. In all of this, manifest destiny is really just helping them out in the long run because if they would have stayed, what could have happened. They could be in a better position, a global superpower alongside the USA. In a quote by Abram Lincoln, that “no man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent.” The US did the opposite of this quote, they govern with the other’s consent. This is bad because it leads to rebels wanting the US to leave their territory. And unnecessary risks, like death and loss of valuable resources. This is a good reason why the US shouldn't have annexed the Philippines, but the other statement I'm about to make overweighs the downside of this
