A teacher/tutor needs to establish and maintain a safe learning environment for their learners, in order to do this a holistic approach should be taken by the teacher whilst identifying and taking into consideration any physical, social and educational elements.
To identify and address physical elements of the learning environment a teacher will ensure they are aware of all relevant procedures and policies surrounding health, safety and safeguarding and carry out risk assessments where required. Learning process and learning styles are key throughout the teaching cycle, Kolb (1984) developed a learning styles model which works on two levels and consists of a four stage cycle of learning and four learning styles,
“Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience” (David. A Kolb, 1984)
The four stages in the cycle of learning identified include concrete experience, where the learner experiences a new situation or encountered, reflective observation where the learner reflects of the experience, abstract conceptualization where reflection gives the learner a new idea/approach to an existing concept and active experimentation where the learner applies these ideas/approaches to see what results are achieved.
