the body. This approach is helpful when observing a specific organ or observing several organs affected by a disease. The body planes and directions approach divides the body into sections from top to bottom, front to back, and left to right by using different planes. These planes are called transverse plane, coronal plane, and midsagittal plane. According to Bailey (n.d.), “Understanding anatomical directional terms and body planes will make it easier to study anatomy. It will help you to be able to visualize positional and spacial locations of structures and navigate directionally from one area to another” (para. 7). This approach is often used in hospitals when describing the location of a patient’s injury. This approach is helpful in locating the location of injuries and helping to diagnose certain diseases.
There are several other approaches to learn and understand.
The quadrant and region approach divides the adominal/pelvic area and the lower torso into four quadrants and nine regional sections that help indentify internal organs during physical exams. The anatomy and physiology approach focuses on structures and how these structures operate. This approach is helpful when explaining the difference between a normal body part and an abnormal body part. The body and system approach studies the organs of a body and how they function. This approach is used when studying functions such as reproduction, respiration, and blood circulation. The microscopic and macroscopic approach focuses on the smaller parts of the body making up larger parts of the body. According to Iqbal (n.d.), “It deals with the study of microscopic details of distinct structures of human body. Microscopic anatomy is based on a valuable tool known as the microscope” (para. 5). The medical specialty approach focuses on special areas of medicine. This approach classifies procedures, testing, diseases, anatomy and physiology for each body system. This is used in the health care industry when determining field of medicine a person wishes to study. A person who hopes to deal with the heart should study
cardiology. Each one of these approaches is an essential part of understanding the way the human body works. The health care industry deeply relies on these approaches in the work place. It is vital for a person to understand these seven approaches.
