Everything has prepared me for this moment. All the pain, work, stress, and lack of sleep has led up to this. As I sit here staring at this hideous blue mat I can hear the crowd screaming, clapping, wooing, and cheering us on. My heart is racing as I wait for the music to start, it feels like time is slowing down, first seconds then minutes pass by. As my nerves finally get to me and I am about to look up to see what’s going on, the music starts, 5, 6, 7, 8…and I’m up dancing, cheering, jumping, tumbling and stunting my heart out. I’m running through each sequence in my head, remembering everything from practice. As my mind starts to drift thinking of all the work that has brought me to this moment, I find myself back in the practice room. Practice has brought me to understand better, it has taught me everything I know, and brought me to love this sport. This sport that is known as Cheerleading. Cheer does not just consist of waving pom poms, smiling and looking cute, there is a lot more to it. Cheer consists of a series of tumbling, jumping, dancing, cheering, and stunting. It requires a great deal of commitment, exercise and strength. Now you may be confused as to what a lot of this is and how it is done. Well not to fret it is not as confusing as it sounds, in fact it is quite easy. You will soon learn what goes into cheerleading beginning with tumbling, jumping, dancing, cheering and stunting. One of the most physically challenging techniques in cheerleading is tumbling. Tumbling is a series of gymnastics moves, which require you to be able to throw your own weight around and be somewhat fearless. In tumbling most of your sequences begin with a round off, which is somewhat like a cart wheel but instead you run in to it. You run two to three steps leap up with one leg straight and the other bent at a 90 degree angle and throw yourself forward on to your hands, then when your feet are directly above your head you turn your hips 90
