Exploratory Observation

According to the text, descriptive research is defined as a type of method in which a researcher or public official closely observes someone. With the data collected, they can then describe what is being observed without interrupting how the person is behaving. In relation to the topic of school shootings, the researcher would have to take into consideration many different aspects. The time frame leading up to the crime and after is a very crucial point in the case. The researcher would have to find out the intent behind why the person decided to commit the crime. Also, did the individual have any serious mental health issues, family problems, a victim of bullying, or any type of discrimination.
Anyone of these issues stated above can act as a trigger to lead that individual into committing a mass school shooting. Another reasoning behind this ordeal can be the environment in which the perpetrator resides. For example, is the community known for gun/gang violence. Additionally, the researcher must detect if there is a strong significant correlation between school shootings. Administering surveys
to the school’s population can create feedback and insight into what the environment is like during a typical school day. The data collected can also be put to use using another method known as explanatory research.
This method will now be used by the researcher to address what conclusion came from observing the structure of the school shooting. They can now get an understanding of exactly why the shooter decided to do that. For example, if the reasoning is a matter of mental health, then schools can work alongside parents in ensuring the student get’s proper care. Furthermore, creating programs where all students can become more socially connected. This issue can be investigated through several types of methods. It depends on the primary focus of why the shooting occurred in the first place. If we use bullying as the main focus, the researcher has to prove that this is a valid reason behind school shootings. The evidence provided can help convince schools and the community that there is a connection between bullying and school shootings.
Through exploratory research we can analyze the different causes and outcomes of bullying.
Data can be collected to compare with any future changes in this issue. Description research is associated with “counting or documenting observations.” Meaning after observing we can find a relationship between bullying and school shootings. Whereas, through explanatory research we make sense of what the problem really is and explain the findings to schools and communities. Lastly, applied research will act as a no tolerance approach. Numerous programs and techniques can be thought of to help lower the occurrence of bullying and avoid school shootings. Implementing these methodologies can help us understand and fix this issue. First, we can anatomize the problem and think of what solutions can best work. Lastly, we put the results into effect in hopes of diminishing school
shootings.
